SCARLET FEVER.

.INTRUSION AT WELLINGTON COLLEGE. About, eight days ago scarlet -fever appeared in Wellington College. First one boy was prostrated, and two or three others received the ailment. The Health Department's assistance^ was promptly .summoned as soon as the disease was noticed, and vigorous measures were taken to prevent the fever from doing further mischief. - The patients were isolated in the College hospital, and the dormitories and somo other living a-ooms were disinfected. About six days remain for the fever's period of incubation to be completed (measured from tho -date when the first case was reported), but it is not anticipated that there .will be .any jnore trouble. "While people are (bo grossly .careless seariefc fever will' never be stamped out of the city," writes a lady, commenting on the fever figures published in The Post yesterday. "I will mention a case that .came under my own knowledge. My maid was taken ill, and I sent her home. It proved to be scarlet fever. Some three weeks later she called to see me ; the skin was thickly peeling off her hands and f^ce. She informed me she was on her way to a • draper's- tj>- do some shopping — she-eeem-*ed quite ignorant that she ,was a source of danger to others."

Herdman, ex-member for 'Mount Ida, who for somo years past has -been a resident of Wellington, will deliver a political address in the Concert Hall of the Town Hall to-morrow evening at eight o'clock. Mr. Herdman is a candidate in the Opposition interest for the .Wellington North seat at tho t coming general election. ■Milk was dirt cheap in Wellingtonterrace about 11 o'clock this morning. 'There was so much of it to spare that 't was poured upon the ground, but not; with the owner's sanction. While the driver of a large milk van was absent,, tho two horses yoked to the vehicle 1 'became. fidgety and bolted. A butcher's* cart, unintentionally, tried to check the. runaway, but managed to stop only a, number of the milk-cans. The impact, knocked these- vessels topsy-turvy on to the road, and their contents were* strewn far and wide. After this cargohad been jettisoned the horses sprinted .harder than ever, and disappeared rapidly around a corner. The butcher's property was not damaged. At the weekly session of of the Pioneer Lodge, No. 11, 1.0. G.T., Bro. J. M. Johnston, C.T., pi-esided, and there was a good attendance of members. An invitation was received and accepted from tho Newtown branch of the No-License League. The item for the evening was "Sisters to Officer and Entertain," and they officered the lodge for the remainder of the evening. An excellent musical programme was provided and contributed to by Sisters Staples, Ryan, F. "Taylor, and M. Hyde. Tho sisters received a cordial vote of thanks at the-, conclusion of tho meeting.
