Long Island, the fashionable summer •resort in the State of New York, has. been the scene of an e'xeiting tragedy, Captain Hams, oi the United States Artillery, and a son of General Hams, who distinguished himself in the Spanish.; and Cuban wars, shooting William Annis, a New York publisher. Hams, with his brother Thornton, waited on the landing-stage of the Yacht Club, amid-a crowd of fashionable pleasure-seekers, until Annis landed; then the captain shot Annis six times mortally, whilo his brother, with a revolver, kept the crowd back. Hams declares that Annis ruined his young wife. Foreseeing a collision, Mrs. Annis.; vainly tried to prevent her husband landing.
