[pn_Sß ASSOOIATiOK.] SOCIAL EEFQRM. AUCKLAND, 26th November. •The Salvation Army is carrying on, a big" propaganda of social reform work in New Zealand. In addition to the inebriates' home recently ' established on Bell's Island in the Hauraki Gulf, several new institutions are shortly, to bs opened. Mr, .Findlay, ofßemeura, has made a gift^' of one and three-quarter acres as ;i site for the erection of a home for destitute and orphan girls, and it is expected that a building capable of accommodating eighty girls will shortly bo established there. . A home for destitute and orphan boys is also being opened in Taranaki, Mr. Jenkins, of Eltham, having presented a large f urriished- house and ten acres of land for the purpose. ALLEGED THEFT. ' DUNEDIN, 25th November. At the Supreme Court to-day Alexander Ramsay was charged on seven informations with theft of moneys aggregating £15 IDs/ collected by him at Milton • under circumstances- requiring him to account for the same to Messrs. Wilson, Eraser and Co., bicycle agents, Invercargill. ' The ease was not finished when the court rose. A SERIOUS CHARGE. AUCKLAND, 26th November. At the Supreme Court this afternoon Richard Harland, who was, convicted last week on a charge of having committed an offence upon his niece, a girl under the age of sixteen years, was sentenced lo two and a half years' imprisonment. DRAINAGE WOIIK AT TIMARU. TIMARU, 25th November. The Borough "".Council to-night accepted the- tender of Fibbes and Clymop.t, of Dunedin, for tho first section of reticulation of underground drainage — one fourth of the whole — at \£52S2. Two Tima.ru tenders wore £5993 and £6133, and two other.- Dunedin tenders £11,941 and £13,492. ' The tender is for' labour only. THE UPKEEP OF A LIBRARY. .. CHRISTCHURCH. 25th November. The Canterbury College Board of Governors, at a meeting to-day, resolved to increase the public library subscriptions with the object of reducing the annual deficit' which now takes place.
