CHESS.
His Excellency the Governor has accepted the office of Patron of the New Zealand Chess Association. ' The next tournament to decide the championship of the colony will be held in Auckland, play commencing on Boxing Day. Entries should reach the Hon. Secretary, Mr. C. W. Tanner, not later than 12lh December. The work of revising the Association's rules has been further advanced during the present week. In connection with the proposed new rules there were several points of difference between the Association's Council and its Revision Committee, and as tho latter is a South Island body some difficulty has been found in "arranging a conference for the purpose of avoiding the large amount of work which a settlement by correspondence would entail. An opportunity has now presented itself, howevei , and a conference was commenced on Monday last and concluded yesterday, the Revision Committee being represented by Mr. S. S. Blackbume, of Christchurch, and the Council by Messrs. Tanner, B. B. Allen, Barnes, Kelling, and A. I. Litllejohn, the last-named acting as chairman. A give-and-take spirit marked the conference, and agreement was ultimately arrived at on all issues. The poll of the affiliated clubs, which it was proposed to tako in connection with this matter, will consequently not be required.
