NEW ZEALAND JOURNALISTS' INSTITUTE.

» THE ANNUAL REPORT. Tho fourteenth annual 'report of the Council of the New. Zealand Institute of Journalists, "to be presented at the annual meeting to be held in Wellington on tho 18th September, shqws that the Institute has a 6mall credit balance. Tho question of registering the Institute under the Conciliation and Arbitration Act has been undsr consideration, but ths Council ie unanimously of opinion "that such a step would be undesirable. Ifc is, however, open to members of tho various 'branches to determine whether a separate union should bs established. Meetings on this subject have been held by some of the working journalists of Auckland Province, but nothing definite has so far resulted. The necessity of revising the bylaws of the Institute is again impressed upon members. Apropos of a report submitted by a special committee set up last yeaT, the annual report, says : — At the last annual meeting a committee was set up "To enquire into and report to the Council upon some scheme having for its object the improvement of the Institute and increasing its advantages to working journalists." This committee presented an interesting and exhaustive *eport, which wao considered by the Council at a meeting held on the 15th May last, and discussed at length. It -was considered that the proposal to appoint a secretary at a salary of £60 per annum was at present impracticable, and consequently the wotlc of compiling a complete set of records of service of each member of tho Institute could not be given effect to. Tho Council is of opinion that brahch secretaries should continue to advise members throughout the colony of Vacancies as they occur ; but that it would fee impossible to establish an efficient Labour Bureau in connection with the- Institute. It wan thought that an effort should be made, by each branch to induce employers to avail themselves of the agency of the Institute in obtaining the services of literary men. The Council agrees with the proposal for the issue of a | quarterly bulletin, containing gossip of j interest to journalist and conducted un- i der the auspices of the Institute, pro- ' yided thai ifc .can be made self-support-ing. Tho idea of issuing a monthly journal first emanated from this province, and .tho matter was referred to Messrs. Douglas and Birch, who, after making enquiries, reported .that sufficient revenue»from advertisements could not be secured to warrant the Council taking fhe matter in hand. Further, Me various branches of the Institute did not <ake sufficient interest in the proposal, in tho matter of supplying information ■for itho news Columns of the proposed journal, to warrant the project being proceeded with. With regard to clause six (6) of the recommendations of the committee, -the Council unanimously agreed that the" headquarters of .the Institute should bo permanently located in Wellington. x ) At the Hutt Court this morcing, bcfo" D[. A. M'Arthur, S.M., and Messrs. J. Cudby, and J. Wilkiti, Justices, five lads admitted having damaged some cabbage* in a Chinese gardener's property, and were ordered to pay £3 — a quarter of tho amount claimed. Mr. Wilford appeared for the boys. In* the case of the Commissioner of Taxes 'v. Ward Bros., claim for £12 2s 4d land tax, which the defendants contended they should not have to pay, the Magistrate decided against defendants on the point raised by them some weeks ago that, as ho was the paid servant of tho Government, he had no power to adjudicate. His Worship admitted thero was a hardslflp on the merits of the case, but ho was bound by Statute. A number of parents woro fined for not sending their children to school regularly. Peter Hutson, tho owner of a wandering horue, and' Thomas Law, a footpath cyclist, were each fined 53 with 7s costi.
