EVIDENCE AT TIMARU. [by telegraph.. — press association.] TIMARU, This Day. The Police Commission sat hero this morning, and took the evidence of a sergeant, a detective, sad six constables, this being all offering. The detective and constables -all said that the system oi control and supervision in Timaru was of tiro ..best, the constables never knowing when to cx-p-ect a visit fr,om .ths sergeant. Tho majority of .the witnesses had been stationed at Christchurch, and expressed the opinion that the control th-are, as at 'Timaru, left no voom for improvement. Some- of ithe witnesses had been stationed at Oamaru, and ith«y raid there was nothing in .MacdonaM's suggestion tha,t thieving had been going on there. All ■denied the suggestion of thieving by th« fore« at Timaru. \ Sergeant Waring' said there had only be<sn three- burglaries in Timaru for tho past four ye-ars. At tho conclusion of ,the evidence, Inspector Dinnie made a statement refuting the- suggestions made by several papers that the Commission was appointed becauso .tho Government was not fc-atißfied with his sta-tsme-nt tha-fc tho police "had got .to the bottom of th-a Dunedin thcft6. Thst statement only applied to Dunedin, and the Commission was appointed 'to enquire into other matters 'besides the Dunedin thefts, and the- Police Department had suffered -a good deal from unjustifiable, and adveres comment.
