Tho Conference of Chambers of Commt>rco has adopted a rosolution stating that tho timo is opportuuo for scttloment of tho Now Ilnbridos question. A <lclegato rcmnrkcJ that the action of tho Fodorat Government in rotation to islands in hba Pacific was so far of a 1 character which suggcsletl -that it might bo better for tho Commonwealth to drop tinkering with them any longer, and Jeavo thorn to tho New Zealand Government, which might bo expected to do something statesmanlike What Avas tho uso of subsidising a lino of steamers to tho isl^nus when sottlcrs. could not send their produce to Australia! A motion was passed doclaring that tho business of tho Pacific cablo might, by improved mothods and increased activity in management, bo considerably expanded, and an annual loss might bo nvoidod or converted into a profit. The loss was attributed to want of business methods on tho part of tho Postal Department.
