His speech was not of a violent Party character, though he strongly deprecated legislation calculated to disturb confidence and prevent enterprise, especially in goldmining matters, lie reviewed the work of last session, expressing approval of some of tho Government measures and opposing' others. Lewis spoke in reply to the Hon. J. M'Kcnzie in the Theatre Royal to-night. A motion was passed thanking him for his dclence of tho Hon. Mr. Lewis's reply last night to Mr. M'Kenzie's attack on Mr. Rolleslou was most effective. There was a largo audience, which was most demonstrative in its expressions of approval of Mr. Lewis's action in coming forward to defend a politician so widely esteemed throughout the colony, and who il was well known was incapacitated by illness at the time Mr. Al'Kenzie invaded his electorate. The vole of appreciation and confidence was carried with but two dissentients, and enthusiastic cheers were given, both for Mr. Rolleslon aud Mr. Lewis.
