William Symonds, of Wellington; returning from Sydney by the Manapouri, via Auckland, died at sea, the cause of death being cancer. A purae of 50 guineas has been presented to Mr. Ayson, curator ut the Masterton fish ponds, as a mark of esteem, for the great services he has rendered to angling pursuits. The weather ut Christchuroh is very fine, and there is every appearance of it continuing for the Carnival week. The body of a man, name unknown, has been found at Waitawhiti, near Masterton, much decomposed. A Fruit-growera' Association has been formed at Woodvjlle. Thomas Scott is missing from the Taieri distriot, and supposed to be drowned. Scott, of Cheviot, has been committed for trial on a charge of perjury in a sly grog-selling case brought against him. At the inquest on Donald M'Laren, who died on the Carterton Show Ground, the verdict was Death from Appoplexy. Edward Scott (C 2), who cut his throat at Kaiapoi, has died in the Christohuroh Hospital Burglars entered tho Commercial Hotel, Palmerston North, early. yesterday morning, but were scared away by a watch-dog. Mr. Dickin is Chairman of the new Pobangina County Council, and Mr. J. Hayns engineer. Jas. Begg, blacksmith, committed suicide at Ashbnrton on Saturday. The body was fonnd in a creek, but he had evidently tried to hang himself first. A polo club has besn formed in Feilding. The headquarters of the New Zealand Kennel Club are to remain at Christchuroh for another 12 months. Miss Leila Adair, balloonist, waa oarried against a clothes-line in attempting an ascent at Christchurch on Saturday, and was thrown to the ground. Her head was seriously out from orown to neck, hor left wrist was dislocated, and she was severely bruised. Fires have destroyed an eight-roomed house in Ponsonby, Auckland, oooupied as a boardinghoase by Mr. B. Leonard, and owned by Mr. Blott; a house at Feilding, owned by Mr. Joseph Smith and occuDied by Mr. R. Sheehy ; and part of the implement works of Messrs. P. and D. Duncan at Ashburton. At another un-country station in Wellington (Akiteo), notice has been given that no Bwaggers will be accommodated after Ist December. For the Dunedin Mayoralty Mr. Fish, the retiring Mayor, and Councillor Dawson, have been nominated.
