Tho Government inspection paiade of tho City Rifles was well attended last evening, 59 of all ranks being prosont on parade, under Captain Collins and Lieutenant Wilson. Major Newall was the inspecting officor. After inspecting tho arms and appointments, with which ho expressed himself much ploased, ho called on the officers and non-commissioned officers to put the oorps through various movements in company and arm drill. He then made two companies of the corps, and exercised them in battalion drill for nearly an hour, whon they were dismissod. A full attendance of tho members is requested to-morrow ovoning at Mount Cook to make arrangements for the company aooial and annual distribution of prizos.

Information has been received in Wellington to the effect that in conscqnonco of a heavy sea which was running on the Taranaki coast the attompt to float tho Wanaka was not mado yesterday. The Hutt County Council decided thii morning to interview the Premier in suppor of a proposal that local governing bodiei should bo allowed to discharge tho dutiei for which Licensing Committees are nov appointed. The local representatives ii Parliament aro to be asked to support thi proposal.
