« A EOWING REGATTA TO BE HELD. A large numbor of gontlemon attendod tho mooting hold at tho Exohango Buildings laßt evoning to discusß tho advisabloneas of holding a rowing regatta during the autumn, and tho proceedings were marked with a good deal of onthusiasm. The chajr was taken by Mr. A. G. JohnBon, captain of tho Wellington Rowing Club, who had convened the meeting. In his introductory remarks he explained that the Port Nioholßon Yacht Club, assisted by a numbor of gentlemon who were not members, had carried out the last Anniversary Regatta. A Bum of monoy was set apart for rowing races, but these events did not come off, and mainly owing to this fact there was a large balance, something like .£1(50, he believed. Later on, the Port Nioholson Yacht Club decided that if application wai made to them they would give .£2O towards tho cost of a rowing regatta, and this money wan still available. The Star Boating Club had written regretting that they could not assist in the management of a regatta, but wore perfootly willing to enter crows. Mr. Johnson pointed out that the Amateur Sculls had been set apart for rowing in Wellington, and he went on to explain that a gentleman who did not desiro his name mentioned had offorpd to give a trophy, with £15, for tho Amateur Sculling Race, while another had undertaken to present four beautiful raodals for a four-oared race. Mr. A. de B. Brandon, Captain of the Star Club, was not able to attend the meeting, but had intimated his intention of contributing £2 2s to the funds. Several other offerß had also been reoeived, one from Mr. F. Moeller, and another from Mr. G. Mcc, and there was every prospect that Buffioier.tly good prizes oould be offered to induce outside competition. Tho Chairman also explained that if a regatta wore held here next month the Wakatus (Nelson), Tuamarina (Marlborough), and Wanganui would send crows. Mr. G. Fiahor, M.H.R., thought if it wore for only tho purpose of allowing tho Amateur Sculls to bo rowed hero there should be a regatta. Ho was glad to see that the proPobul to have a regatta had been taken up bo enthusiastically, and he trusted that a very successful regatta would be held. Ho moved — "That, in tho opinion of thiß meeting, a rowing regatta, to be termed tho Autumn Regatta, be held on Eastor Saturday (weather permitting), and, if not suitable, on Easter Monday." The motion was seconded by Mr. F. Coheu. and agreed to Mr. R. C. Renner, captain of the Oriental Boating Club, proposed, " That the following committee be appointed to carry onfc the regatta : — Messrs. A. de B. Brandon, H. Hyams, J. Roso, J. Speed, G. Fisher, M.H.R., J. E. Hayes, T. K. Miodonald, F. Cohon. E. W. Mills, L. B. Jordan, W. Barber. W. Hearn, S. Waters, Captain Valooner, W. Bridson, E. Rose. E. Jackson, A. a. Biss, Barnett, W. Simm, and tne mover." The resolution was seconded by Mr. A. Aaher, and ourriod. Mr. T. K. Macdonald proposed, " That the Seoretary be instructed to apply to the Regatta Committee who carried out the Jubilee Regatta under the auspices of the Port Nioholson Yacht Club for the sum of X5O out of the surplus now in hand, for tho purpose of carrying out the proposed autumn rowing regatta.'' He thought that if a proper representation wore mado to the Port Nioholson Yacht Club that body would inoroaae thoir contribution from .£2O to .£5O, and bo suggested that, the Chairman and other members of tho Comniitteo wait upon tho club and urge an inor<?aso. The motion was Bocondod by Mr. J. Roso and agreed to. The Chairman said that be should be only too happy to wait upon the olub as suggested. Mr. J. Rose moved. "That a subscription , list be at. once opened in aid of funds, and that active canvassing be at once commenced, dividing the city into workable portions." Mr. J. B. Speod seconded the resolution, which was agreed to. On tho motion of Mr. Speed, seconded by Mr. T. M'Kay, it was resolvod, " That outside clubs, i.e., those in tho New Zaaland Amateur Rowing Association, be at once notified thnfc the regatta will be held, and that full programmes will be forwarded as soon as possible, and also asking them to Eend crews." The Chairman quoted from the balancesheet of the regatta held by the Stars iv 18S8, showing that the total fund had been .£llO 17s lOd, the credit balance being &1 18s lOd. He said that with such an experience on the part of the Star Club, the present meeting ought to be able to carry out a good regatta next month. Mr. G. Mcc explained that the balance in tho hands of the Port Nicholson Yacht Clnb was nothing like £160, and he warned the present meeting not to be too sanguine about induoing the olub to increase their contribution from .£2O to £50. Mr. J. M. King suggested the formation of & permanent rowing regatta committee. As. things wera at present, when a regatta was. held no one know which club was going to tako up next yoar's affair. In Christchuroh there was a regatta club, and matters aquatic there wero very well managed. Mr. Macdonald moved a cordial vote of thanks to Mr. Johnson and the officers of the Wellington Rowing Club for their exertions in connection with the present movement. He paid a high compliment to Mr. Johnson for his zeal and ability in all matters relating to aquatics. The motion was carried by acolamation. and after Mr. Johnson had acknowledged the compliment the meeting terminated. A meeting of the committee was afterwards held.
