The late Chief Secretary gazetted his son, Benjamin Berry, supernumerary treasurer, to be an officer in the fourth-class Civil Service, over the heads of a number of competent officers of longer service and superior attainments. He has not passed the Civil Service examination as required by law. The Hon. W. J. Clarke has determined to retire from the turf. He sold his racehorses Petrea and Avernus to Mr. Long, of Sydney. i It is believed Mr. Clarke feels hurt by the comments made in public on his running to save his horses. The Bank of Australasia has presented Mr. Hector Munro, manager of the bank at Moa, with a handsome gold watch, in recognition of his spirited defence of the bank on sth November, 1879. New South Wales, 10th March. A number of gentlemen intend to test the experiment of preserving meat by Jannisch's patent, which consists of packing it in a peculiar kind of salt. Meat packed in this salt at Berlin recently arrived, and when opened was found in splendid condition, and had the appearance of being just killed. It is said that fruit, milk, butter, fish, and game can be just as easily preserved as meat, and the conserve salt is as cheap as the ordinary salt. In consequence of the bread at Parramatta gaol being considered bad, the prisoners refused to receive it, and several threw it over the walls. All the warders were called together, as a rising was expeoted. Bread and biscuits were obtained from the neighboring shops, which quieted the prisoners. A horrible murder has been committed at Moonlight Flat, near Bathurst. A man named Foulson killed his son and daughter, aged 11 and 12 respectively, with an adze, in a fit of delirium tremens. The Irißh Famine Fund amounts to JJ22.000. A movement is on foot amongst those interested in the Ulawarra district to form a company for the purpose of establishing milk condensing works on a large scale. The intention is to raise a capital of J35000, to erect machinery capable of condensing 2000 gallons a day, yielding 542 dozen lib tins.| Queensland, 10th March. The National Rifle Association has resolved to offer trophies in the colonial rifle match during the annual rifle meeting in the Exhibition week, in July next. Rifle Associations in other colonies will be invited to send teams. The Irish Relief Fund exceeds £ 10,000. Tasmania, 10th Maroh. Relations between the Houses are strained. The Assembly disagreed with the Council's amendment reducing the loan. There was no quorum in the evening, the Council alleging discourtesy on the part of the Government. The Bishop and Dean Bromley proceed to England on an eighteen months' tour.
