THE PLUNKET SOCIETY

Owing to the absence of the president (Mrs Sheat), Mrs J. Macpherson presided over the monthly meeting of the Dunsandel branch of the Plunket Society. The following members were present:—Mesdames Barnett, Chamberlain, A. J. Johnston, P. Kime, Blair, Scott and J. Wraight.

A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Sheat, who was absent owing to the illness of her husband, and sincere wishes were expressed for his speedy recovery.

The proceeds, amounting to £10 10/-, were received from the civil servants' ball committee, to be forwarded to the Christchurch headquarters for the Karitane Guinea Appeal. It was proposed that Mrs Kime forward the money and that the secretary write thanking the civil servants for so kindly donating the proceeds towards- the Karitane Hospitals, and congratulating them on the splendid results, which were entirely due to the energetic way the committee had worked. The committee also thanked all those who contributed towards the supper. It was decided to hold the annual "bring and buy" on September 20. The nurse's report for the month was as follows:—Three mothers, three babies, one pre-school child, four visits to homes at Dunsandel, four telephone calls; extra visits en route, one Rolleston, two Burnham. HOCKEY. A team of six players from the Dunsandel Ladies' Hockey Club com- — ..prising Mrs J. Swanson, Misses K. ■Johnston, M. Allen, M. Skinner, O. Bilbrough and D. Caldwell, journeyed to Ashburton on Saturday to take part in the Ashburton Hockey Association's six-a-side tournament. The team was successful in its first game, but was beaten in the second round by the Hinds team, which finally won the grade. RAINFALL. The- rainfall for August at Dun- % sandel, as shown by Mr C. A. Wright's gauge/was 2.87in., as compared with 1.20in. for August of last year, and 1.15in. in the same month of 1932. The total fall for the year to the end of August was 21.31in., whereas the total fall for the same months in 1933 was 11.29in. and 11.05in. for 1932. Rain fell on eight days of the month, the heaviest fall being 1.20in. on the 25th. YOUNG PEOPLE'S CLUB.. The fortnightly meeting of the club was held in the Church Hall on Wednesday last, when Mr A. S. Walker presided over a fair attendance of young people. The speakers were the Rev. R. R. Adair and Mr L. G. Eade. The former gave an interesting address on "America and her People," and the latter an outline of the Douglas Credit System. In the short time at his disposal, Mr Eade elucidated the \ workings of the system which is ere- \ ating such a stir in the world of economics. At the conclusion of the addresses both speakers were accorded a votel of thanks which was carried by acclamation. The penultimate meeting will be held in a fortnight's time, when it is hoped that a further address on "First Aid" will be presented. P.W.M.U. The monthly meeting of the P.W.M.U. was held on Tuesday after- j noon. Mrs Adair presided, and there was a good attendance. Two very interesting letters were read, one from Sister Jessie, of the Maori Mission, which was read by Miss Stainger, and one from Miss Eileen Reid, of the China Mission, read by Mrs Jas. Walker. The subject for the afternoon was Canton Villages Missions, which was spoken on by Mrs H. A. Brown and Mrs B. Watson. A duet was sung by Misses K. Johnston and G. Walker, who also played pianoforte* solos. A bring and buy sale was held, and the sum of £2 was realised. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies. SCHOOL SOCIAL. There was another large attendance at the Dunsandel School Committee's fortnightly social. The most successful players at cards were Miss E. Allen and Mr H. Brears. Music for the dance was played by Mrs Tomlinson. Two more evenings of the series remain. The committees of the Dunsandel and Selwyn schools !?" are endeavouring to arrange a match North v. South of main line.

Institute, held in the Hall anteroom. The president and secretary (MissM. Schnelle) were appointed delegates to attend the half-yearly conference in Christchurch in October. The roll call, "Which do I prefer, Summer or Winter?" was well responded to. Mrs Paterson was elected a member. A sales table for the benefit of institute funds realised 18/7. It was decided to hold a euchre tournament at a suitable date, in aid of the funds. A competition, for a plate of shortbread, was won by Miss Schnelle, with Mrs L. G. Eade second. An interesting demonstration was given by Mrs W. B. Cunningham, of Brookside, on the making of a seagrass stool, and was much appreciated. On the motion of Mrs Greenwood, Mrs Cunningham was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A short community sing, led by Mrs G. B. Couch, was enjoyed. Mrs R. F. Pilkington was the accompanist. The secretary was instructed to write a letter expressing sympathy with Mrs W. J. Kemp in her illness. It was decided to hold a challenge cards match at the Town Hall on Monday, September 17, between members, their husbands and gentlemen friends. The hostesses were Mesdames A. J. Inwood and D. W. Hayes, and Misses G. Wylie, G. Greenwood and A. Brears. The singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close.

An enjoyable evening is promised to all who attend at the Presbyterian Hall next Tuesday, when Christchurch artists, assisted by the choir, will give a concert in aid. of choir funds. Included in the programme will be a pianoforte duet (Miss D. Kerr and Mr J. H. Aldridge), tenor solo (Mr W. Bradshaw), cornet solo (Mr V. Aldridge), vocal duet (Messrs W. Lambert and W. Bradshaw), humorous item (MissMcAlister), part-songs by the choir, and a community sing for everybody. PERSONAL. Mrs W. J. Kemp has returned to her home from the Christchurch Hospital, and is making steady progress toward recovery.
