MISCELLANEOUS COLONIAL NEWS.
Mr. W. 0. Roberts, for nine years manager of the Bank of New Zealand on the West Coast, takoa the management of the Dunedin branch in the same aervice, in a few days. He was presented at a banquet with a souvenir of plate, value £250. The banquet given was the largest ever held on the West CoaBt. The tine chestnut colt Gladiator by the celebrated Gladiateur, the winner of the Derby and the St. Leger, &c, out of Fatima, haB been purohased for Mr. John Shield, of "Wanganui. Gladiator was imported from England by Mr. John Moffatt, ot Victoria, and was purchased as a yearling for 450 guineas. Instructions have been received to commence the surrey of a railway line from Waitara towards Wanganui. It is said that Captain Ellis, of Auckland, has bought the hull of tht ' Paterson.' Portions of the deckhouse have been picked up by natives on the Harriet Beach. Mr. Donald Ross, C.E., the well-known Bridge Contractor of Waipawa, met with a serious accident on Wednesday morning, August 19, whilst engaged in pile-drivinff. A portion of the machinery fell and struck him, rendering him unconscious. A telegram which was received at 4 p.m. states that the patient Is slightly recovering, and had recognised Mr. Todd. Mr. Anthony Hayman, commission agent, committed suioide at Dunedin by cutting his throat with a penknife in bed on the morning of August 19. Hit ion was sleeping in the same room. Mr. John McLean, of Grey mouth, hai ob« tained the Westport contract for the Mount Rochefort Railway.formation and permanent way, for £16,795.
