THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL IN THE ALBERT BARRACKS.
The following is a copy of Message No. 13, from his Honor the Superintendent to the Provincial Council, with reference to obtaining a portion of the Albert Barracks for a Grammar School : — "The Superintendent transmits for consideration by the Provincial Council copy of a letter which he has received from the Honourable the Colonial Treasurer in reference to an application for the use of a portion of the Albert Barracks for a Grammar School. The Superintendent will be glad to learn, the opinion which the Council would entertain in regard to the application. — Thomas B. Gillies, Superintendent, fSuperintendent's Office, Auckland, 10th November, 1870." " General Government Offices, Auckland, 7th November, 1870. — Sir,— l have received from two of the members of the Grammar School Commission a request, on behalf of the Board, that permission may be granted to use the building within the Albert Barracks known as the 'Grenadier Barrack ' for a grammar school ; the Board undertaking to give up possession on such reasonable notice as may be agreed upon i between the General Government and themselves. I should be obliged if your Honor would favour me with your opinion on the subject. The matter is one of great importance, and it seems to me that the ground i is too valuable, and of too much importance 1 to the whole city of. Auckland, to be relinquished for the purpose. The land which •would be required for a playground, and which, for playground purposes, should be shut out from', public use, would he a very great, loss to the public. I venture to suggest that you ahouldcause the question to be submitted to the Seleot Committee of the Provincial, Council, which as I understand, has been appointed to inquire into the whole subjectj ect of the Auckland barrack sil;es ; and I shall be glad also if you will cause the civic anthorities to be consulted, and their opinion obtained. — I have, &c M Julius Vogel, Treasurer^;- • u t i • - -> f • ■
