INDIA.

Greek Am. — Some excavations recently made by Lieutenant Johnston, in the vicinity of Peshawur have led to the discovery of a pottery, evidently of Greek origin, and dating some 1,800 yeara ago. Some important results are anticipated. The Throne of the Moguls. — We are informed that the crystal throne of the Great Mogul, which lately arrived fiom Delhi, is to be scut to England, aa a present to Her Maje&ty. The Late Mb. Wilson. — We trust that England will not measure the gratitude of India towards the late Mr. Wilaon by the manifestation of most entne and disgraceful indifference by the men among whom he had so earnestly and effectively laboured. Such a concourse as attended hia funeral is rare, but even that was not so striking a feature of the solemnity as was the evidence of real soirow and respect through all the great assemblage. Even the press of Madras and Bombay, who had bitterly opposed him and his measures whilst living ; and the natives, who doubted the newsystem he was inaugurating, so contrary to all their prejudices, all alike pay their tribute to the high character and stiaightforw&rd energy of the departed statesman. But the men with whom he worked, whom he so laboured to drag out of the mire of their own blundering incapacity, came together a week after his death, and in council assembled, took up Mr, Wilson's labours, declaied their intention of carrying out nil his plans, and not even by a word acknowledged to the world their obligations, or their regrets. — Englithman, August 22.

Discovery of Jewels,— lt is stated by the "Oude Gazette" that a discovery has been made in Lucknow " of certain valuable property which belonged to the rebel Queen Mother, the mother of Birjis Kudur, and the lady who admired Mummoo Khan so much. By order of the authorities the house of Jewandoss, jeweller, was searched, and two boxes of jewels and precious Btones of great value which belonged to the illustrious lady above-mentioned, were discovered. The man was taken into custody."

Fight between an Elephant and an Alligator.— A struggle between an elephant and an alligator is thus noticed by the Govuckpore correspondent of the "ttvufkatu": — "A few dayb ago one of the commissariat elephants went to drink water in the Eamgurthal Lake, which is close by. As he was drinking, an alligator caught hold of his proboscis, and attempted to * 'pull him into the water, while the elephant tried to

rag him up. The coute»t lasted » few minutes, at last the elephant prevailed, and, bringing his adversary out of the water, dashed him on the ground, and finished him by crushing him with his huge fore paws."
