EASTERN SUBURBS LEAGUE
Mr. A, C. Blake presided at tho quarterly meetingof the Eastern Suburbs Citizens' League on Monday night. The league endorsed the Mayor's opinion that the City Council 'should consist of twentyone members instead of eighteen, as av present. The league emphatically protested against any further increase in the tram fares, particularly .'long-distance fares, until the end of ilhe financial year, March 31 next, thus giving time for a fair trial of the fares now in operation. It was decided that the telephone authorities be requested to continuo tho 6ystem of marking subscribers' numbers of party-wire telephones with nn asterisk to signify they arc party wires. Tho league considered that the tirao had arrived when an expert as general manager of tlramways should bo appointed to carry out the policy of the City Council with regard to the city tramways, such manager to-, be directly responsible to the City Council, and Dot! under the control of the city.engineer,
