The evidence showed that accused «'in' cousins, and came to \ ii els land a week ago from Oamaru. They approached a Customs official, and offered n bribe of .£SO for an introduction to someone- on the shin who could get them •iwav lo Australia, and promising .C!ao to the person on the ship. An introduction was arranged, and they got aboard with their lugsage. after giving the Customs official .C 5 and a cheque for ~U>. and the person o-j the ship J2O and a cheriue for .Clol>. Soon after they were arrested, and made a clean breast: ol the matter Berrv had .EG ss. Hid. in cash, nnd Bnmie 12s. A, letter in Berry's possession sliowpd that they intended U take assumed names, and that moneys comin" to them should be converted into hank notes of Inrro denominations and forwarded by mail. Bnime had been drawn in the second ballot. Berry had not yet been drawn. For the defence, it. was stated that. Berrr had got into .financial difficulties, which ho wished to -scape. Both were prepared to enlist. Berry was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Brume, v \ w was under twenty.when drown in the ballot, was remanded till Thursday, to enable him to enlist.
