Sir Frederick Lang, Speaker of .the House, arrived in Wellington yesterday from Auckland. A. Press Association telegram from Wanganui announces the death yesterday, at the age of 19 years, of Mr. George Morse, the well-known racing liandiciipper.. v Cabled advice has been received that S'ergeaut Douglas Ball, eldest son of Mr. J. Ball, editor of the Wanganui "Chronicle," had been wounded, and is in hospital in Franco suffering from a severe gunshot wound in, the abdomen. Sergeant Ball sailed with ; the advance party of the 3rd and 4th Battalions of the Rifle Brigade, spent some time in Egypt, and entered the trenches in France in the early days of April, 1916, getting through the Sorame battle without a soratch. At the time of his enlistment he was on the staff of the Te Aro School and. a student at Victoria College.

Mr. Routh, assistant manager of Te Aro House, is to go into camp to-day.

An old and respected resident of Petone, in the person of Mr. James Sharpe, passed'away yesterday at the ripe ago of 8G years. Born in Aberdeenshire in 1831,. he came to New Zealand some 30 odd years ago, and for a time engaged in'farming pursuits at Karori. Later he removed to IPetone, where, with his sons, he embarked on various enterprises and won the respect and goodwill of a wide circle. Coming to New Zealand when well on in life, Scotland was always very close to his heart, and never far away from Lis thoughts, and any movement associated with his native land found in him a willing and generous supporter. He leaves a family of four soils, John, James, Peter and Matthew, all well-known residents of Petonc; and one daughter, Mrs. M"Arthur. also of that township. The funeral will take place to-morrow at 1 o'clock.

At the annual meoting of tho Wellington Bowling Club last evening a letter was received from Mr. J. W. Bridge, who apologised for his absence, and stated that he had just received word of his son's death at the front. Members rose and stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of sympathy and respect. A similar tributo was paid to tho memory of the late Messrs. J. M'Glashan, C. Palliser, and S. J. Flewellyn, members whoso deaths in the course of tho past year were recorded in the annual report.

■Advice was received in Wellington yesterday by Mr. M. J. Crombio that Iris brother,' Corporal Fred. W. Crombie, previously reported woumded on June 7, was killed in action. Ho was a eon of the lute Hr. C. J[. Crombie, Commissioner of Taxes, and at the timo of his enlistment ho was employed on the commercial staft' of the "Evening Post." Ho was born in Wellington 34 years ago, and received his education at St. Patrick's College. Before he joined the "Post" ho was in the Advances to Settlers Office. Corporal Crombie was well known as secretary of tho Wellington Tennis Club. Ho was a tennis and a popular player at club tournaments. Ho was very well known, too, ns an organiser of bazaars, and as isceretarv he did Rood work on behalf of tho St. Patrick's College Old Boys' Clivb winch was in existence some years ago. Corporal Crombio was not married. Ho left New Zealand as, a ser-geant-major with the Eighth. Reinforcements in November, 1015, and pftcr being stationed in Fgypt for some time he was in April, WIG, transferred to Sling Camp, whero ho did notable work as a musketry instructor. He went to Franco in March last. Quartermaster-Sergeant Nicholson and Corporal Matheson were entertained by tho men of the guard on Sornes Island prior to their entering camp. Mr. It. Thomas, rropriotor of the English Pierrots, is returning shortly to Melbourne on private business. During his absenco Mr. Victor Beck will act as manager.
