MANAWATU SHOW.

THE JUDGINGGREAT EXHIBIT OP SHORTHORNS; E. SHORT WINS THE ROMNEY CUP. (By Telcffraph.—Sjjeolal! Heportor.) Palmerston North, November 6. Tho big stock day of the Manawatu summer show to-day was. rather unpleasant. Heavy rain foil early in the morning, and later a high wind rose,. Then, when a large crowd was, assembled on the showgrounds in the afternoon, there were several downpours. Tho strike is reckoned to have acted' somewhat to tho detriment of the show, but there is not a great deal of evidence of this about the pens or in the machinery hall. Aix interesting sidelight is the fact;that tho Manawatu flaxmill workers decided to boycott the show. The attendance appears to be satisfactory so far, and the usual monster gathering is expected) to-morrow if the weather is fine. One hundred and fifty - motorcars, lined tho road outside the main entrance this afternoon, and thoro was ■also a small number of horse vehicles. Some excitement was caused during the afternoon through an alleged endeavour of two "Cheap-Jacks" to vanish. .The story of that incidbnt is related, in another part of this., issue. . The horses at the show are 6trong in nearly fill divisions. Tho draughts are splendid, and Wellingtonians may bo interested to,know that the City Corporation's horses sent up were very successful iudeed. The heavy division was as good as could be seen in the Island, and as was expected Mrs. ; J. D. (Hastings) and Mr. E. Short, of Ferlaihg, wore the chief prize-takers. Tho'shorthorns were a show in themselves.. Competent judges consider that a better lot could not have been collected in the Dominion. They come from all over the Island. Mr. R. D. M'Lean, the Hawke's Bay breeder, added: four wins to the successes he has scored already this soason, and the other prizes •went to various districts. Mr. Erne.st Short's Hereford®, a magnificent lot, were beaten in only two classes. There aTe some who consider that this year' 3 exhibition of Ayrshires is tho best yet made at Palmerston North, but a comparison of that kind is, of course, a difficult one. However, the stock aro excellent, and the prizes well distributed. Likewiso in Jerseys. In Holsteins, Mr. W. I. Lovelock, of Palmerston North, scored a big win. The Romney section was the sheep, division jn which the big battle occurred. There were large entries—all beautiful sheep. A reference to the appended lists will show that none of the noted breeders had 1 anything in the nature of a scoop. ' The 100-guinea Short Cup for the best Romney ram in tho show was won by Mr. Short himself. The winners of the cup to date are: —1908, Gray Bros.; 1909, E. Short; 1910, W. Petty; 1911, W. Perry; 1912, E. Short; 1913, E. Short. A win for Mr. Perry would have meant that the cup would become his permanent property. The donor cannot, under the conditions of tho competition, win the trophy outright. Mrs. J. D. Ormond, of Hastings, and Mr. William Perry, of Masterton, fought out the Lincoln competitions, and the majority of the prizes went to the Masterton breeder.
