IMPOSING SPECTACLE.
THE PARADE AT END OF THE DAY. CITY SPECIALS IN FORCE! After the wofk on the Athenic concluded at 5 p.m. yesterday, the special men who had been either lounging about the ivharf or ship were summoned by the sergeants' whistles, and those horsemen who Were not on street duty resumed tho saddle. The squads formed up at the foot of tho wharf, and at the word—' 'March 1" wheeled into Waterloo Quay, batons in grip. A company of eitizen specials, who had heen guarding the open railway yard near tho Meat Export Company's cold stores throughout the afternoon, greeted tho appearance of their comrades from the country with cheers, which the men returned with spirit. Again, as they wheeled from Bunny Street into Eeatherston Street, a crowd of people assembled in the grounds at the rear of tholSovernment Buildings sent up vol* leys of cheers at the sight-. I® the meantime the mounted men formed up in order in Waterloo Quay, some 600
strong, and, after all was ready, proceeded at a Walk southwards along Waterloo and Jervois Quays to the barracks at Buckle Street. An Arrest Made, It had been expected that there might he some metal throwing, so the ordinary police wore ordered to do duty on the flank. There is an open space next to Levin and Co.'s warehouse, used as a depot for road metal, gravel, and timber. This was black with people before cavalcade started, but the police cleared the crowd off ths timber, and kept a sharp eye fof any persons that, in their opinion, looked like doing mischief. > -
Nothing, however, happened until the horsemen were passing the Queen's Chamber, when one man who had been drinking, made to hurl a stone at the specials. He was immediately seized by two burly sonstables, and hur-
ried off to the Lambtou Station. A crowd followed antiei.patin| trouble, but half-a-dozen mounted police shadowed tho littlo party, and shut off the crowd with the'assistance of tlio fofit police, and eventually _ the man was placed in the lock-up without anything in t'lio nature of a scene. Imposing Sight—tltt Foot Specials. Tlio march of the foot specials, urban and otherwise, up Featiicrston Street, constituted a btirring spectacle, anil showed at once that excellent discipline had been established. \ The City squad consists largely of well-known commercial: and professional men, well able on appearance to giv&a good account of themselves. l'hey had been an guard throughout the afternoon on the Waterloo Quay side of the Lambtott railway yards, but had been, given no trouble. As they marched up Feaflrarston Street, with their badges on left arms, and batons in their right hands, they were heartily cheered. All social sections of tlie community aud men of widely different ages marched in tlie ranks. Tho drill, resolute bearing, and obedionce to tho word of command were, very noticeable. This was the first occasion on which the City special men had turned out in anything like force, and it was'an eye-opener as to what is being quietly achieved in that direction. By many onlookers it' was held that tW m»roh of tho foot ..special* wm tho 6goot%elapf IfcaJppt ||e*
cials were formed in fours in column of routo and measured nearly two hundred yards from front to rear.
