DEVON'S SALVAGE.

Tho salvage party is still working on the Devon, but owing to the Strike no material has been brought up to town lately. A considerable amount of gear is ready for transport. It is reported that there is no change in the condition of the wrecked steamer.

The Revs. Messrs. Rear and Garlick, and Father M'Donald are passengers from Lytteltoii hy this morning's ferry steamer. r

Commander Richards, Adjutant Marshall, Colonel Fan-ley, Captain Souter, and Captain Ransom, all Salvation Army officers, are passengers by T3io Maunganui from Jjyttelton this morning. '

It may be safely said that there is no better-known cover design in . the world than that of "Punch," and tho announcement that, for the first time for . nearly seventy years, thero is to bo a change in it is ene of flinch interest. The famous drawing hy ■ Richard ("Dicky") Doyle is still to bo- used, but in future it will bo printed in two colours. This is part of a scheme for tho general improvement of tho external appearance of "Punch." . Few parsons now living recollect "Mr. Punch" in any other cover than that which ho has worn over sinco January, _ 1849, when, it is interesting to note, it contained ftn advertisement of Part 3 of Tiiaolcoray's "Pendemiis," Thackeray being at 'that tirtio ono of the- principal contributors to the Paper. As a matter of fact, however, "Punch" has changed : jits coat no fewer than seven times siheo the first issue on July 17, 1841, with tho cover design of A. S. Honning. The next design was that-of Hablot K> Brown© ("Phiz"), the third was br William Hrtrvov, the fourth bv Sir Johii Gilbert, the fifth by Kenny Meadows* and tiro sixth and "seventh by Richard Doyle. ■ The addition of tho second colour, intra- ; duced far tho first time in tho October issue, enhttnc.es- Doyle's design, making th® figures wliieh it contains stand out with, greater clearness. The new comet sighted in Australia last week is thus described by Professor Cooke, the. New South Wales Government Astronomer A telegram, was received to-day (Friday) at tho Sydney Observatory from Kiel, niiiso.uiicing tho discovery of a sett cotfifct. Search was made this (Friday) evening., and tho l-ifew arrival easily found. It i.s brighter than Coijset Wostphnl was, -and in the telescope a small tail is distinctly visible; but it .is not visible to the naked eye. If it should prove to be the same ns tho third' comet of 1000, which was discovered bv Qiacob-iru, a lifted comethunter, it will fix that definitely as a new member of tho solar system, with e a period of about 0} years. Further observations of this cotticfe will therefore possess considera.b'e scientific interest. Its position was measured at the Sydney Observatory this evening, and found to be right ascension 19 hours IS minutes 40 seconds, and decimation 11 degrees 39 minutes south at 0 p.m. Sydney time, I
