IN ESSENTIAL INDUSTRIES

♦ Appeals Made Against Entering Gamp To safeguard the Dominion’s production, key men in essential industries, such as farm workers, who were drawn in the second ballot for territorial training, will not be allowed to enter camp, according to an announcement by the Christchurch Manpower Committee yesterday morning. The committee will inquire into their importance in industry, and even if the men concerned have not lodged appeals, the Director of National Service / will appeal on their behalf. It is expected that between 70 and 100 men called in the second ballot will by this means be held back temporarily from training. In most cases they will be farm workers who are essential in .their various centres until the harvest is completed, and others in the same category include seamen and marine engineers who arc needed during the peak of the export season. The committee has so far dealt with about 60 cases arising out of the second ballot, leaving about 1000 still to be considered. Eighty-seven appeals by men called in the first ballot have yet to be decided. Of those, 50 are cases in which the appeal is base..' on conscientious objection. Such -cases are dealt with in Wellington. In 25 instances the committee has not yet completed its inquiries to enable a reserved decision to be given and 12 appeals have been held up because the appellants have not been medically graded. Reserved Decisions Decisions on cases heard on Monday were announced yesterday as follows: — Arthur Robert Kiddcy, cycle-maker, appeal dismissed; Frederick George Hibbard, farm manager, appeal by Robert Peach, of Ashiey—appeal dismissed, subject to Hibbard not being called up till April 1; A. Donald, of Belfast —nppital dismissed; George Scriven Brent, photographer appeal dismissed; Leslie David Hepburn, radio technician —appeal dismissed; Henry Ker Cotter, market-gardener—appeal dismissed, subject to appellant not being called up till April 1. The committee will hold its next public sittings to-morrow and on Friday.
