WEDDING

ALLAN—PAPWORTH

St Andrew’s Church. Ashburton, was decocted with bronze-shaded chrysanthemums for the wedding of Joyce Joan, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs J. H. Papwqrth, to Frank William, son of Mrs A. E. Allan, and the late Mr W. J. Allan, Ruapuna. The Rev. D. D. MacLachlan performed the ceremony, and Miss Watt was organist. Miss May Allan sang a solo during the signing of the register. The bride, who was escorted by her father, wore a trained frock of pearltinted satin, the bodice being shirred at the shoulders and forming a soft V neckline. A swathed sash, knotted in front, defined the high, curved waistline. Her veil of cut tulle was arranged from a circlet of orange blossom, and she carried a bouquet of white chrysanthemums. . The two bridesmaids, Miss Dons Patchett (Timaru) and Miss Megan Papworth, sister of the bride, wore frocks made alike of old gold cloque, cut on lines similar to the bride’s frock, the butterfly sleeves being shirred up the centre, and the sashes lined with violet velvet, _ Short tulle veils, attached to caps of violet flowers, were worn off the face, and their posies were of violets. Mr S. Clifford (Dunedin) and Mr James Papworth attended as best man and groomsman respectively, and the ushers were Messrs R. Beckley and W. Johnston, On leaving the church, the bride was presented with a silver horseshoe by little. Margaret Beckley, niece of the bridegroom. . , ■ The guests were received at ot. Stephen’s Hall by the bride’s mother, who was wearing a navy wool cloque coat trimmed with black fox fur, a navy frock, and hat to match. The bridegroom’s mother wore a black wool lace frock, a black hip-length seal coat, and a black hat. ' The bride travelled in a rust selfchecked vyella suit and a hat to tone, and carried a smart brown coat and accessories.

Mrs A. W. Beaven, who will leave shortly for a trip to England and the Continent, was entertained by members of the Sumner-Redcliffs branch of the Plunket Society at an enjoyable afternoon party held at the home of Mrs A. Morten (“Stonycroft," Mount Pleasant). . In making a presentation to Mrs Beaven, Mrs W. H. BASKETBALL CLUB

ANNUAL DANCE

The Sacred Heart Old Girls’ Basketball Club held its second annual dance at Jellicoe Hall. The lanthe private dance band supplied the music, and extras were played by Miss Joan Owens and Mr Alan Burke. An exhibition tap duo was given by Miss Norma Turner and Mr Maurice Dixon. . The committee responsible for the success of the dance were Misses Nellie Mahoney (secretary), Kitty Cummings, Nellie Glasonbury, Mary Murray. POST-WEDDING DANCE

Mr T. Mould (Puaha), held an enjoyable dance in the local schoolroom in honour of his eldest daughter’s marriage. Songs were sung by Messrs T. Robinson, F. Adams, J. Reed, and L. Humphries, and other items were given by Mr Kearney (tap dance) and Mr Brocherie. Music for dancing was supplied by Miss Webster and Mrs L. Radford. Mr W. Mould was master of ceremonies.

SOCIAL AT BARRY*S BAY

Miss Doreen Weir (French Farm), whose marriage will take place shortly, was entertained by French Farm residents at a social held in the Barry’s Bay Hall. During the evening Mr R. Donovan asked Miss Weir to accept a handsome dinner service from the residents of French Farm as a token of the esteem in which she was held. He also presented to her a table of gifts sent by her many friends. Mr F. A. Lewthwaite then presented Mr W. Cogan, who is captain of the United Bays Football Club, with a cheque from his club members.

A pleasant time was spent in dancing, the music being played by Mr H. A. H. Stewart. Extras were played by Mrs J. Mould, Messrs Albert Hunt, and L. Cairns. Mr Stanley Wright was master of ceremonies.
