* The Minister for Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) yesterday visited several factories in Christchurch and conferred with the proprietors, discussing costs as affected by the new industrial legislation. In the afternoon he received a number of deputations. This evening the Minister will be the guest at a social function arranged by the Linwood branch of the Labour party. Mr S. S. Dean, a member of the management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union, arrived from Wellington yesterday morning by the Maori. Dr.*’ D. G. McMillan, M.P., was among the passengers from Wellington yesterday morning. Messrs D. W. Westenra and N. E. Tingey returned from the north by the Maori yesterday. Mr E. McKenzie, one of the New Zealand Rugby Union selectors, was among the passengers from Wellington yesterday. Dr. A. C. McKillop left yesterday for Dunedin to witness the Payne Trophy match, to be played there to-day. Mr C. Flavell, a member of the Heathcote County Council, was taken ill at Auckland on his return from a visit to Honolulu recently, and has not yet been able to return to Christchurch. The council at its meeting last evening passed a resolution of sympathy with him. Mr A. $. Drayton, managing director of Dr ay ton-Jones, Ltd., has just returned from a successful business tour of the Australian states. ■ Mr F Trevlyn Sendall has accepted a .position with the Masterton Hosiery Company as South Island representative. Mr lan S. Bowater, director of W. V. Bowater and Sons, Ltd., -and Edward Lloyd Investment Company, will arrive in Australia about the middle of October and will stay until early in December, when he will leave for South Africa. Mr Bowater is being accompanied by his wife, who is a daughter of Lord Dawson of Penn. Before going to Australia, they will spend a couple of weeks in New Zealand, where they will arrive on September 28, and where they will be met by Mr E. W. C. Hughes managing director of Bo waters (Australia), Ltd.
