Three of the quarter-final games in the New Zealand amateur billiards championskip -vyere decided yesterday in the fifth day’s play of the tournament. All of these game's were closely contested.
A. Albertson, Lyttelton, provided the bright spot of the playing R. W. Whitford (Christchurch), present Canterbury champion, he set up the highest break in the tournament so far when he scored 104 before breaking down.s The remaining quarter-final and both 'semi-finals will be played to-day. The results were;— , A G. Southerwood (Christchurch) 666 beat J. Turpin (Christchurch) 644. At the 400 mark Southerwood was 140 behind, but then settled down and gradually overhauled Turpin until at 550 they were level. From then on it was anyone’s game, Southerwood eventually winning an exciting match by 22 points. Best breaks: —Southerwood 29. 45, 25, 24, 21, 33, 42, 22. 25, 27, 33; Turpin 22, 20, 23, 22, 39, 25, 37, 29, 28, 25, 56. _ A. Albertson (Lyttelton) 666 beat R. W. Whitford (Christchurch) 618. Albertson had an early lead of 200, but just lasted long enough to stave off a determined challenge by Whitford. Best breaks:—Albertson 56, 35, 24. 23, 104, 61. 32. 37, 35. 22; Whitford 20. 37, 23. 34, 58, 23. 20, 24 31’ 22, S. Moses (Wellington) 666 beat R. F. McKay (Christchurch) 653. Moses started well and had a lead of more than 100, but McKay, playing a fine uphill game, almost retrieved the match. Best breaks:—Moses 43, 27, 25, 30, 26, 22, 26 , 22, 27, 25, 26, 42; McKay 27, 46, 32, 23, 46, 36, 30, 44, 29. 24. Games and times for to-day are as follows: 110 a.m.—L. K'oldsworth (present champion, Auckland) v. A, Bowie (Dunedin), quarter-final. 2 p.m.—G. Southerwood (Christchurch) v. A. Albertson (Lyttelton). First semifinal. 7 p.m.—S. Moses (Wellington) v. winner of Holdsworth-Bowie match. Second semifinal.
