A general ' improvement in the financial position of -the Westport Trotting Club in spite of the reeent slump was indicated at the annual meeting of the dub held in the County Chambers on Thursday night Present:—Messrs K. Lovell (president).

McCabe, J. Watson, W. Elliott, W. Craddock. R. O’Neill, F. Keating. J, M. Robertson, R. Thompson, J, Diirnin, J. Hartigan, P. Morgan, T. Scanlon, C. Janes, C. F. Schadick, E. McDonald, A. Bolt, and T. Williams, and the secretary (Mr F. Clark). In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet (previously published), the president referred to the amount (£1114) paid to the Government last year in taxation compared with £909 the previous year, and said that the club had to pay that tax regardless of whether or not they made a profit on a meeting. Mr Lovell said that the club bad bad. to pay two years ago almost £IOOO in taxation, although they made a loss on the meeting. Perhaps the new Government would remove some of the anomalies in this vicious system of taxation. With more people in the district, and more money about, the club hoped to make a much greater profit this year. Officers were elected as follows: Patron, Mr A. Morley; president, Mr H. Lovell; vice-presidents, Messrs E. McDonald and J. M. Robertson; stewards, Messrs F. Hagedom, W. Roche, W, Craddock, C. F. Schadick, J. Watson, F. Keating, B. . O’Neill, T. Scanlon, C. Jones, W. Elliott. F. Morgan, J. Hartigan, and M. B. Scully; auditor, Mr J. Radford, Members stood in silence to record their sympathy with the relatives of Mr Roche, formerly starter to the club, and with Mr Frank Scott in his recent' bereavement.

At the suggestion of Mr Scanlon, it was decided to recommend the incoming committee to consider putting a memofifal race on the programme in memory of Mr Roche and obtaining a suitable trophy. Appreciation of the services of the secretary was voiced by Mr Schadick, and a vote of thanks was passed accordingly. It was decided to recommend the incoming committee to consider altering the rules of the club to provide for a larger committee of stewards only a limited number of whom to be reelected each year. The mover suggested that a committee of 15 with five re-elected each year, would be suitable. The following new members were elected:—Messrs J. Evans, A. Kerr, S. Kerr, J. Stevenson, R. F. Crawford, L, T. Webby, T. J. Watson, D. McMillan, and T. McLaughlin.
