It was hard luck for Sir Charles Clifford to send Wild Chase all the wav to Wanganui and not be able to race him. He has developed knee trouble, and while he has not broken down it will prevent him from fulfilling immediate engagements, Gallio ! did not perform up to expectations yesterday, but it was his first race since last Boxing Day, and he was very much on bis toes before the race, sweating freely even in the birdcage. He has developed into a very solid looking colt, and is sure to improve with the gallop, though he gives the impression that he will need a good bit more yet before being at his best. Full of Promise Karl on the other hand was very much finer in condition and looked very ready to perform as he did. Karl showed a lot of promise as a youngster, and as he had been galloping brilliantly on the tracks his win was freely anticipated. Karl has a pedigree which says he should stay, being by Arausio from Sunny Hours, by Leighton from Los Vegas, by Boniform from La Valiere. Nonette, Los Angeles, and other good class horses come from this line. Well-bred Winner The Buzzer, winner of the maiden event on Thursday, showed an excellent turn of speed and he has in addition an attractive pedigree. He was bred in Queensland, and his sire. The Buzzard, is by Spion Kop by Spearmint, a son of Carbine, His dam, Eastern Belle, is by Syce from Culture, a mare bred by Messrs W. G, and G. L. Stead, by Boniform from Culroy, by Wallace, another son of Carbine, so that The Buzzer Has a doubling of that great horse in his breeding. Culroy was a half-sister to Culprit, a first-class mare when racing in the Stead colours. The Queensland stayer, Lough Neagh, comes from this family, -dam being by ©ezoeiiaa |rom JWlJfe gqch @

pedigree The Buzzer should be! able to stay, and this, combined with his demonstrated pace, should make him a three-year-old above the ordinary. He has not been hurried, having been given only one race last season, and that very late in the term. He was not a dear colt, Mr Bayly securing him for 190 guineas at the sales. For Australia B. H. Morris, who is to do the riding for Mr T. A. Duncan's team in Australia, will leave on Tuesday by the Maunganui. Mr Duncan will leave on the Awatea toward the end of the month. The horses have no immediate engagements, their first appearance being about the first week in October. Mr Duncan stated that it was by no means certain that Oratory would start in the Caulfield Cup. The interruption in her preparation might see her lacking in the proper condition for such a race. It all pends upon how she progresses and shapes in her first racing over there. In the absence of Morris, H. N. Wiggins will do the riding for the stable. Impersonator Unlucky 1 The form of the three three-year-olds, Dawning Light, Laughing Lass, and Impersonator, who filled the places in the hack sprint at Wanganui, did not compare with the form of Karl in fhe Flying Handicap, and in fact their time was not so good as that put up by The Buzzer jn the maiden event over the same distance, when the latter had matters very much his own way, but they are all very useful gallopers. Impersonator was the unlucky one of the trio, and there is little doubt that on a more roomy course he would have won. He is not a big gelding, but is one of the wiry sort, and has plenty of pace. There was good backing for the Australian-bred colt, Brazen King, in this race, but he was never within striking distance of the front. He was on- of those, however, who finished very strongly, and he will be more at home shortly over a longer journey. Encouraging Effort Another three-yearrold in Surella, a handsome son of Surveyor, and a rich liver chestnut, was actually last to settle down in this hack sprint and was giving the leaders a long start. He finished eighth, well up, an excellent effort, Owned and trained in Auckland, Surella is a half-brother to Bullymoney. The dam, Starella, is by Day Comet or Archiestown from JVTonella, by Monoform—Amorelle, by Phoebus Apollo, a branch of the Flora No. 18 family. All the three-year-olds started by T. C lorge. at Wanganui showed promising form. Sea Wrack was third in the maiden, Deficit was just out of a place in the hack sprint after being prominent throughout, and Free Gold ran very well for a while in the same race. Thev should all improve, as their preparations at Trentham were inter--j rupted by the weather, j

Particulars of cheap fares and train arrangements for the races to be held at Ashburton nejct Saturday are advertised in this issue. A special horse train leaves Christchurch at 9,10 a.m. and 3 SResial passenger train at 10,10 s ,ia. , ~*■,
