ABOUT WITCHES
Barbara Napier. By Janet M. Smith The Moray Press. 304 pp.
The author’s rather tedious style makes her attempt to reconstruct the Scotland of James VI. a dullish novel. Nevertheless the book has points of historical and human interest which redeem it. The play upon the superstitious credulity of the Scottish people of the time by the North Berwick witches, the description of James’s court with the intrigues and counter intrigues of its nobles, and»the strange romance of the Earl of Bothwell with the associate of witches, Barbara Napier, give first-class material for the making of a historical novel, but the author has missed using it to its best advantage.
