NEW BRIGHTON BOROUGH PICNIC

arrangements made by PUBLIC MEETING

A public meeting convened by the Mayor of New Brighton (Mr E. L. Smith) was held in the Council Chambers last evening to discuss arrangements for the borough picnic which is to be held on February 20. Representatives Were present from the District High School Committee and the New Brighton Business Association. The Mayor said that the purpose of the meeting was first to decide whether a borough picnic should be held, and second, to see that the school children had a real picnic this year. A deputation had waited upon the council and a small grant had been made to both the Central Brighton and North Beach schools. Unfortunately, North Beach had already made arrangements for its own picnic, and would not be able to co-operate. It had been mutually agreed that February 26 be declared a borough holiday, and the meeting had to decide whether a picnic be held, the location, and the method of financing it. Gifts had already been received. It was decided, on the motion of Mr H/ S. Mitchell, that a picnic be hold Mr F, Norris (North Beach School Committee) suggested that in future the council fix the third Wednesday In February for the picnic. This would enable the various organisations to make provision early. Mr Smith said that he would undertake to call a public meeting in November to make arrangements for a large borough picnic next year. A long discussion was held on the location of the picnic, but as no finality could be reached on the subject of financial responsibility, it was decided that those present form a committee, with power to add, to make final arrangements. It was agreed that the picnic be held at Diamond Harbour, and that the charge be 2s for adults and Is for children, with infants free. Canvassing and finance committees were set up to complete arrangements.
