$ . MOTORISTS' LUCKY ESCAPE COLLISION IN OXFORD TERRACE An unusual accident took place in Oxford terrace about 11 o'clock last night, and two men, A. F. Manning, of Coutts Island, Kaiapoi, and T. W. Ross, of Lincoln College, had lucky escapes from serious injury. A ear was parked on one side, and a trailer on the other side of Oxford terrace, when Manning and Ross, both of whom were driving in opposite directions, tried to pass in the centre of 1 the road. The right-hand wheel of each car hit that of the other, becoming tangled together, and both vehicles were considerably damaged. One car had the right wheel broken to pieces, and the other had the mudguard almost torn off. FATALLY INJURED BY TRAIN; (pesss tssociiTioE tbt.wnmiO INVERCARGILL, July 26, Thomas Menzics, m elderly man, was struck by the Kingston-Invercar-gill train as it was drawing into the Lumsden station at 4 o'clock this afternoon, and was gravely injured. He did not regain consciousness, death occurring at 6.30 p.m. Menzics was crossing from the business area to the other side of the town by a pathway traversing the railway line at the northern end of the station, when the train drew in. While he was on the railway track a whistle from the locomotive sounded, and it is believed that he was undecided whet to do. He was bending forward a:; the train struck him, and was thrown on the platform. The train was not going very fast at the time.
