[ On Saturday a tractor party, in- : eluding Dr. Thomas C. Poulter, Mr i Waite (radio operate)-) .and Mr E. I J. Demas (driver) began a second ' attempt to reach near-Admiral ' Byrd's advance base. .' The tractor is dragging three sledges with a load of 374 gallons [ of petrol which will be distributed , among various depots along the [ route for use on the return trip. ,' The party carries two months' j rations. [■■ Because most of the trail flags are ; buried under snow Dr. Poulter intends to travel by navigation. Communication with Admiral I Byrd was lost on July 20, but rej stored on July 27. when he said (that his wireless receiver had not ; been functioning. He was advised 'that a second attempt was being made to reach him. Admiral Byrd '.replied that he would keep a light 'burning on top of the roof and -also Ifly a kite carrying a light. ; I The temperature was 13 degrees j below zero when the tractor star- } I ted, compared with 71 below when ■■[the previous start was made.
