j RICCARTON METHODIST CIRCUIT OPENING NIGHT The annua! competitions of the Riccarton Methodist Circuit were commenced last night, when the piano reading at sight, the humorous recij tation open to men or women, and j the song in character for a boy or | girl, 14 years and under, were decided. j The programme provided for the de- | ciding of the men's solo (open), but owing to the absence of one competitor the final decision was postponed I till to-night. j The minister of the circuit, the Rev. jH. Ryan, welcomed those present. j mentioning that probably the success of last year's competitions was still vivid in the memory of many. Mr Ryan said that Miss Edna Firth, who ! was to judge the instrumental section, ; was well known in musical circles, and | was associated with the Methodist : Church. He was pleased to welcome 'Mr Leslie N. Fleming, judge of the ; vocal and elocutionary sections, who : had served so splendidly in a sirnij lar capacity last year. He further men- ' Honed the work of Misses E. Leathwick and E. Jackson and Mr W. Barrel], which contributed much towards the I success of the competitions. The large attendance last night augurs well for the remainder of the I week. The competitions will continue i every evening this week and a demonsj tration concert will be given on Wedi nesday, August 15. | The following are the results:— Piano.
