CONTROL OF SPORT i NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION MEETS irr.KJS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM!.) i BLENHEIM, September 7. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Boxing Association opened this morning, Mr C. T. Smith, presiding in the absence of the president, Mr H. R. Dix. The delegates were accorded \ a civic reception by the Mayor. The report and balance-sheet were adopted without discussion. Mr T. Seagar (Timaru) moved that the rules be altered to allow championship bouts on a percentage basis. After discussion the remit was lost. Mr Garcia moved that a fee be charged for all permits to clubs holding tournaments, the proceeds to go to an insurance fund. Ultimately the motion was recast to bring it into line with a similar remit carried at the last conference, and carried. The fee was fixed at 10s. Mr Dawson, treasurer, during a discussion on finance, submitted a statement showing that an Australian visit was estimated to cost £350. This would leave a debit to be made up by a 2 per cent. levy on house, takings or a straight-out. levy on associations, A remit recommending the association to bring down an estimate of receipts and expenditure for the ensuing year, at the annual meeting, was carried. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Heeney (Gisborne) that the minimum purse for professional title bouts be reduced from £SO to £35. Election of Officers. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr W. Newbigin (Hawke's Bay); vice-presidents, Messrs H. R. Dix (Marlborough), G. Bush (Auckland); New Zealand Council, Dr. P. F. McEvedy, Messrs D. R. Hazzard, J. R. Simpson, E, Blundell, E. A. Dawson, H. A. Sterling, and Colonel St. J. Beene (all of Wellington): appeal committee. Messrs C. F. Sanders, V. R. Meredith. H R. McKenzie (Auckland). Four applications, from Hawke's Bay, Whangarei, Wellington, and Gisborne, were received for next year's tourney. On the vote the figure was awarded to Hawke's Bay, to be held at Hastings. There was an animated discussion when Mr Lindsay (Southland) moved

that if an Australian team visits New Zealand, an intercolonial tourney be held at Invercargill. Several delegates objected to the settling of such a question so far ahead, and the motion was withdrawn. PROFESSIONAL BOUT HAWES V. FRANKLIN 1 The Christchurch Sports Club, for its seventh tournament this season, to be held in the Caledonian Hall on Tuesday evening, has arranged a particularly attractive programme. The chief bout will be that between Percy Hawes, the locai professional featherweight. and Joe Franklin, of Gisborne, over 12 rounds, whilst the preliminaries will consist of contests between members of the crew of H.M.A.S. Canberra and local amateurs. Hawes is undoubtedly the best feather-weight that Christchurch has had for years. A very successful amateur career ended in his winning the New Zealand title at his weight. I-Ie combines hard punching with clever boxing, and opposed to Franklin, who is similar in style, a great bout should j result. This will be their second • meeting in the professional ring, their > first contest in New Plymouth being j considered' one of the best seen there for many years. . The Canberra is reported to have some firstclass exponents, who fight with plenty of vim in the true navy style. Against a local team they should provide a night of action and thrills. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the first bout will commence at 8 o'clock. All tickets and reserves are now obtainable at Lange's, United Service buildings. He will also meet four other fighters. It is anticipated that there will be a boxing boom m Australia, because of the commercial recovery.
