NAVAL RESERVE.

ENROLLING RECRUITS. GOOD PROGRESS IN CHRISTCHURCH. During two nights this week the enrolment and examination of recruits for the Christchurch Division of the New Zealand Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve has been going on, with the result that 80 applicants have been dealt with, and are to be examined medically next Tuesday. Tho results, so far, are considered highly gratifying. The recruiting has been done at" the Headquarters of the Division which are at No. 81 St. Asaph street west. These premises are being got into shipshape order, and already a 4-inch gun has been provided for instructional purposes. The young fellows who arc enrolling are of the right stamp. Many are members of sailing clirbs, or are rowing men. Present indications seem to point to the possibility of onough men enrolling to form a second division. Alternative to Territorial Training. The training in the R.N.V.R. is tin alternative to territorial training. Men belonging to the Territorials may transfer to the R.N.V.E, The hours of training will ■ be somewhat similar to territorial training hours', but the training will be on naval lines, and will include boatwork, knotting and splicing, pilotage, 4in. gun drill, and minesweeping. .The Reserve is open to men from date of competion of cadet training to the age of 25. Conditions of Service. The following gives briefly the conditions of service:— 1. The Reserve is primarily for local defence, but may be called on for service in any part of the world. 2. That whilst enrolled in the R.N. V.R. members are entirely free from all military obligations. 3. Recruits must sign on for four years. 4. The number of drills to be attended is 36 night drills of 11 hours, six half-days for boat work, musketry, etc., and at least seven days' sea-going in one of H.M. ships. 5. Regular attendance is essential, in view of the amount of training to bo j given. : 6. On completion of four years' train- j ing, members can, at their option, reengage for a. further four years.. 7. Under ■ normal circumstances, all future officers will be selected from the ranks. 8. There "is no allowance for travelling to attend parades from their homes. It is further explained that in the event of Hostilities breaking out members will bo required as coastguards, and may be sent overseas if not required in the Dominion. Officers of the Division. The Christchurch Division R.N.V.R. is under tho control of Lieut.-Command-er Boyle, who saw service on H.MjS. New Zealand, and who has with' hnn Surgeon-Lieutenant Hamilton Gould, Lieutenant Kersley, formerly Dover Patrol; Lieutenant Rhind, formerly of the Mine Sweeping Force; Lieutenant Andrews, formerly of the Channel Patrol (well-known as the skipper of the Betty); Lieutenant Dalton, formerly of the Motor Boat Patrol; ant Gunson, who saw soi'vicc on small monitors; Sub*Lieutenaht Wilson, formerly of the Channel Patrol,;.
