PROTECTION FOR THE LAW.
TOWN CLERK AND BY-LAW CASE. [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, June 8. When the Town Clerk of Onehunga appeared on behalf of the informant in a Borough by-law case at Onehunga Police Court this morning, the Magistrate, Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., said that he was unable to allow lay people to take the place of solicitors. The profession must be protected. The Town Clerk: But I am duly authorised to appear on behalf of the Borough Council. The Magistrate: I cannot allow it. A duly authorised solicitor should appear on behalf of the informant. The Town Clerk stood down and the case was heard without legal assistance.
