ASHBURTON T.C.

SAPLING STAKES CANDIDATES.

TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME. The fact that the New Zealand Sapling Stakes is run at the Ashburton Trotting Club's Winter Meeting is the reason for more than average interest being taken in this fixture, and today's Meeting should be one of the most successful yet conducted by the County club. The field for the juvenue race numuers nine, the property oi eight different owners, and the youngsters engaged represent as weh-bred a iot as has ever contested the race. In the handicap events the fields are above the average in size, while quality is well represented. North and South Canterbury sportsmen have been weilprovided lor in the matter of transport by road and rail and the attendance should be well up to the average. The first race will start at 11.15 a.m. and the last is timed to commence at 4.5 p.m., so there is every prospect of the racing being got over in good time, a fact that will be appreciated by owners. The day's card is as follows: — 11.15 a.m.—TRIAL HANDICAP (in harness), of 150 sovs. ljm. Idol Boy .. scr Golden Author scr Golden Vale .. scr Imperial Thorpe Bcr Wrackeen .. scr Moving Pointer scr lone .. scr Author Franz scr Lough Neagh .. scr Dice .. scr Limosa .. scr Bingen Wilkes scr Moira .. scr Lady Bee .. scr Onoto .. scr Prompter .. 12 Monaive .. scr Moneymore .. 12 Roger Lyon .. scr Mussolini .. 24 No Fear .. scr Forward Maid oo Rafa .. scr Danny Boy .. 48 Linkman .. scr Eiffelton Lass 60 Beau Sabreur scr Underscrub .. 120 With a field of twenty-eight horses engaged in the Trial Handicap, luck in the running will certainly count for a good deal in the final issue, while included in the number are several young horses that up to the present have a lack of racing experience Linkman and Rafa are two promising three-year-olds engaged, but with the track at all heavy some of the older horses may be preferred. Moira has disappointed on several occasions, but she may elect to do things right this time. Moira, Danny Boy, and Golden Author may be dangerous at the finish. 11.65 a.m.—LONGBEAOH HANDICAP (in harness), of 175 sovs. ljm. Rustle .. scr Combine .. scr Eva Reta .. scr Great Applause scr Lady Cello .. sci First Wrack .. 12 Molly Bingen scr Llano .. 24 Golden Maid .. scr Caterpillar .. 36 Oarclo .. scr Leo Bellman .. 36 Altonbrook .. scr Huia's Son .. 48 Tot Logan .. scr St. Petrox .. 60 Peter Lynn .. scr Repute * .. 72 Blue and Gold Bcr Lord Tracey 72 Boneta .. scr The Longbeach Handicap will probably find First Wrack, Mr H. F. Nicoll's promising two-year-old, in the field and she raced so well on a previous occasion at Ashburton that she should be well supported this time. It is a big task to ask of a two-year-old and probably older horses in Tot Logan, Combine, and Repute will be preferred. 12.40 p.m.—ASHBURTON COUNTY HANDICAP (in harness), of 400 sovs. 4.36 class. 2m. Shadowland. .. scr Wharepiana .. 24 La Sonette .. Bcr Lady Matchlight 24 Avenger .. scr Epigram .. 36 Haunul .. scr Jean McEhvyn 36 Nantwich .. scr Event .. 48 Double Event 12 Billy Sea .. 48 Honour Bright 12 . Trampfast .. 60 Jackie Audubon 12 Talent .. 72 Bing Boy .. 12 There is the material in the Ashburton County Handicap for a good contest and Shadowland, the early favourite, is likely to retain his position at the close of the betting. Nantwich was heavily supported to win the President's Handicap at the Oamaru Meeting, but on that running she should be held safe by Shadowland. Jackie Audubon has shown himself better suited to a journey shorter than two miles and the same may be said of Epigram, who, however, will be favoured by the going. Wharepiana should race well if the track is heavy and Jean McElwyn has been racing consistently and appears to be at the top of her form. Shadowland, .Wharepiana, and Jean McElwyn look a likely trio to take a hand at the finish. 1.20 p.m.—NEW ZEALAND SAPLING STAKES (in harness), of 6po sovs. For ' two-year-olds. ljm. J, N. Clarke's bo Guy Denver by Guy Par* rlsh—Leila Denver E. F. Blakeley's b c Francis de Oro by Key de Oro—Frances Mrs E. L. Pounsford's blk o Grandlight by Matohlight—Our Aggie' G. F. Nicoll's b g Wrackler by Wrack—Trix Pointer H. F. Nicoll's ch f Wrackeen by WrackPansy • H. "W. Aker's b g Royal Triumph by The Triumph—Rosa Elmo If both Wrackler and Wrackeen are started they will be bracketed on the totalisator. and in this case will be the elect of backers. Wrackeen has not yet started, but Wrackler made such a good showing at the last Ashburton Meeting that his prospects must be considered. Grandlight, a good-looking colt in J. Bryce's stable, with no very fast time against him, performed in good style at Oamaru and Amberley. He is a most promising juvenile and will fight out every yard of the journey. Guy Denver, Francis de Oro, Hinkler, Nigger Dillon, and Royal Triumph have yet to face the starter and their form 7s unknown, but they are a well-bred lot and may effect a surprise, while Sonoma Child, a fullbrother to Harvest Child, was started at the Amberley Meeting without ever being dangerous. He is smart, however, and when the post is reached the order may be Grandlight, Wrackler, and Sonoma Child. 2 p.m.—ACTON HANDICAP (in harness), of 150 sovs. 3.52 class, ljm. Warepa .. icr Rose Marie .. 12 Exclusive .. scr Denver's Doll 12 Royal Authoress scr Mac Dillon .. 12 Vecto .. scr Underscrub .. 12 St. Bridget .. scr Some Wilkes .. 12 Heroic .. scr Great Triumph 24 Mercury .. scr Bankhead .. 24 Florrie Pointer scr Writer .. 24 -Royal Locanda scr Hustler .. 24 Kinny Dillon .. scr Matagonri .. 24 Milo Minto .. scr Bay Nut .. 24 Hard Knocks .. scr Kate Thorpe .. 24 Slump .. scr Royal Serene '.. 36 St. Fillan .. scr Kreisler .. 36 Springnote .. scr Yoicks .. 36 Asset .. scr Nihilist Jun. .. 48 Wenlo .. 12 Huon Denver .. 60 Mavis Wood .. 12 Thirty-five horses make altogether too big a field to provide the best class of race and luck in the draw for places will play a big part in the final result of the Acton Handicap. Heroic is overdue for a win and as he will be bracketed with Royal Serene he should carry the confidence of the betting public. Springnote is a useful sort and Royal Authoress, who will be bracketed with Asset, may not find the. class too good for her. Denver's Doll's form has been a bit disappointing of late, but she is speedy and can handle heavy going. Rose Marie has recent winning form to her credit and Matagduri has i only to go away right to be troublesome, while at the last Timaru Meeting Bay Nut showed winning form that entitles him to consideration. Huon Denver should beat most of the back division. With any luck in the running, Royal Authoress, May Nut, and Matagouri possess prospects. 2.40 p.m.—STEWARDS' HANDICAP (in harness), of 175 sovs. 4.55 class. 2m. Greywood .. ser Peter the First 36 Repute .. scr Trampcrisp .. 36 Llano .. scr Bon Wood .. 36 Great Applause scr All Peters .. 48 Wee Olga .. scr Secret Link .. 48 St. Petroz .. scr Avalanche .. 48 Commander Tim Wood .. 84 Bingen 12 Rose Audo .. 96 I New Metford .. 12 Kerrwood Bell 132 I Oval .. 24 Kelman ... 156

On Oamaru running Avalanche and Trampcrisp appear to hold rare chances of beating Kerrwood Bell in the Stewards' Handicap. Trampcrisp's latest showing suggests that he is on the improve and a repetition of his Oamaru form will find him in the firing line towards the end of the race. Avalanche also looks to have a chance, while Kerrwood Bell is a rare stayer and may be the third choice. 3.20 p.m.—WINTER HANDICAP (in harness), of 175 sovs. 2.52 class, ljm. Sandown .. scr Event .. 24 Lingfield .. 12 Jolly Chimes .. 36 Bold Bill .. 12 Arran Chief .. 36 Theckla Boy .. 12 Okoura .. 36 Dundas Boy .. 12 Kate Thorpe ..• 36 Diamond Child 24 Tommy Direct 48 Locanda General 24 Billy Sea .. 48 Avenger .. 24 Epigram .. 72 Genuine 24 I Arran Chief's showing at Addington was good enough to draw attention to his prospects in the Winter Handicap, in which he is set to meet a useful class of horse. Epigram, if reserved for this race, although handicapped on 72 yards behind, may find the task not beyond him, especially if the pace over the first part is slow. Event has only to leave the mark to be troublesome and perhaps the return to form shown by Tommy Direct at Addington may be maintained. Arran Chief, Event, and Epigram may be handy at the finish. 415 p.m.—FAREWELL HANDICAP (in saddle), of 175 sovs. 2.19 class, lm. Nipper .. scr Yoicks .. 12 Winter Audubon scr Kreisler .. 12 Marlindo .. scr Some Wilkes .. 12 King Sandy .. scr Royal Serene .. 12 Sunstorm .. scr Flora Golding .. 12 Transport . • scr Bankhead .. 12 Vikota .. scr Stan Wilkeß .. 12 Hu6tler . • scr Mate o' Mine .. 12 Slump ■.. scr Laplander .. 24 Planet •• scr Albert Logan .. 36 King Abdallah scr Pointalena .. 36 Nenia .. scr Huon Denver .. 30 Re t a .. 12 Nihilist Jun. .. 48 If Huon Denver leaves the mark smartly in the Farewell Handicap he should bo one of the first to the winning post for he is a very brilliant miler in saddle. Mate o' Mine, too, is a fair sort over the journey, and Transport also can do things with the weight up, while the exhibition King Abdallah made of his field in the Harvest Handicap at the last Ashburton Meeting should not be lost sight of. Huon Denver. Transport, and King Abdallah may be found amongst the leaders at the finish. AUCKLAND T.C. WINTER MEETING. [THB PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, June 8.
