TROTTING FIXTURES. /one 2, *—-Canterbury Park T.C. June 4—Hawke's Bay T.C. Jane 9—Ashburton T.C. Jane 23, 27—Auckland T.C. TURF GOSSIP. Acceptances for the Amberiey Meeting close at 8 o'clock to-night at the C.J.C. rooms. Acceptances for the Dunedin Winter Meeting close on Friday. The Chokebore team has been further depleted by the sale on Monday of the three-year-old colts Hom&gate. by Autumnus from Fairhaven, and Tearaway, by Panmure from Bramblotye. The former was purchased by G. Murray-Aynsley and Tearaway by Mr J. L. 'Fechney, of Ashburton. Both colts are intended for use as station sires. Delightment was scratched for all engagements at the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting at 4.15 p.m. yesterday.—Press Association. - The northern horseman, T. Green, contemplates being present at the Amberiey Meeting on Saturday. The five-year-old gelding by Saxby from Shebeen 11. is coming to hand quickly under G. Reed's charge at -Riccarton, and gives promise of developing into a useful galloper. Malmsey showed marked speed in her gallop with Royal Land at Riccarton yesterday, and is undoubtedly at the top of her form at present. She is eligible to start in the Novice Stakes over five furlongs at Amberley. but as she is invariably slow in finding her feet she will probably be reserved for the Glasnevin Hack Handicap, of seven furlongs, a distance that will be more to her advantage. She will be again ridden by C. Emerson. Tuahine is making satisfactory progress under the care of F. Christmas at Riccarton, and there is every prospeel of the Lucullus mare standing ■up to another preparation. Zaragoza registered an attractive gallop at Riccarton yesterday, and should perform ' well at Amberiey. On her past performances Bhe cannot be considered well treated with 8-9 in the Erineipal event over a distance she as not yet tackled, and she will probably contest' the Amberiey Handicap, in which she is classed within 51b of a good winner in Sir Roy, who, however, is a likely runner in the big race. Evidently her victory in Australia has impressed the handicapper. Star Stranger 11. has been given only light tasks since racing at Ashburton, and is an unlikely visitor to Amberiey on Saturday. Claymore, of whom much is expected later in his career, showed decided improvement in his galloping yesterday, when he registered fast time in a five furlong task. Ho will have his second race at Amberiey on Saturday, but as he lias not been hurried in his preparation he will suffer from lack of experience Amongst the older gallopers he will encounter. R. O'Donnell has received from Melbourne a chestnut filly by Great Star from Mauve, by Martian from Two Step, by Stepniak. She was one of the youngstere catalogued at the Melbourne sales, but was not sold. Chiokwheat (A. Eastwood) was in receipt of an appreciable allowance of weight from Battle Colours in their gallop over a mile at Riccarton yester-1 day, out nevertheless his effort showed him up in a favourable light. On the other hand, Battle Colours registered a pleasing task, and could probably have done better if desired. In reference to advice from Wellington yesterday that C. Emerson had applied for the, ride on Black Mint in the Birthday Handicap, it transpires that Emerson made no such applicar tion, nor had" he evei- considered the matter. In any case he would not have been able to ride the Catmint gelding at the weight allotted, 7-12. Star Raid has improved with .every recent gallop at Riccarton, and should soon exhibit his qualities with the colours up. He has been given plenty of time to furnish, , and the treatment allotted him is certain to have beneficial effects upon his three-year-old career. R. Longley has made a wonderful improvement a in Beaming, and the brother to Sir Roy registered a surprisingly good gallop at Riccarton yesterday. He figures in the programme for the Amberiey Meeting on Saturday. The Novi"e Stakes at Amberiey, open to horses that hare not won a race to the value of £IOO to the winner, promises to be one of the tit-bits of the Meeting. Merivnle, Scrambler, Gav Crest, Greyfinch, Despot, Snlgele. and Sea Gay have all shown speed over a five furlong journey, and if Malmsey is produced she will assist %oward« a most interesting contest. Fresco gave a most disappointing display in nis gallop at Riccarton yesterday, and at no part did he show signs of being able to keen pace with Amor and Hforatorium. This was in contrast to his recent efforts. on the track, and he must'have struck one 1 of his "off" days. He is to be ridden by C. Eastwood -in the Starkv Memorial Handicap at Amberiey, and if his form be satisfactory, he will bo taken to the Dunedin Winter Meeting. Marriage and lufek arrived almost together for F. Dempsey. He was married recently, and at the Adelaide Cuo Meeting scored five wins. In Melbourne the opinion obtained that Dempsey did not ride as well after his return to Melbourne as prior to going to England, but recently he has done well enough to indicate a return to the Forro that-once made him a racing idol in the southern capital. If Dempsey were to ge to England again, one writer says he has no doubt he would shine as much as-at his previous visits. A majority of the; races in that country are mn on straight „ tracks, and Dempsey likes them.

The active members of G. J. Pine's team are being treated to an easy time, and the stable wall not be represented at the Amberiey Meeting. T. S. Roulston, who has negotiated the sale of Satrap, states that only now has the sale been finally confirmed by cable from Australia. He announced that Satrap had been purchased by a Queenslander at a substantial fourfigure price and will leave Wellington by the Maunpanui on Friday in charge of M. Duggan.—Press Association. The article which "The Yeoman" contributes to the "Weekly Press"_ to-day contains a particularly interesting account of this season's two-year-old form in New Zea'and On the saire mtge there is a photograph of Black Watch, who was bred bv Mr J. B Heid, and is one of the fancied candidates for the English Derby. TROTTING NOTES. Acceptances for two trotting events at the Amberiey R.C.'s Meeting to be ctecided on Saturday, close to-day. Native Chief, by being handicapped on 4.25 for the King George Handicap, to be decided on the opening day of the Canterbury Park Meeting, has entered the list of horses eligible for the P«ew Zealand Cup. His behaviour at the post in some of his races has been anything but good, and he may not be the most desirable horse- to have in New Zealand's principal event. Since leaving J. J. Kennerley's stable Native Chief has been regularly driven on the roads, but it is a question as to whether this will get over his dislike of barrier starts. Black Admiral is doing nicely in his work under M. B. Edwards at Yaldhurst and will be seen out at the coming Meeting at Aldington. Handicapped on 4.26 in the King George Handicap, lie already appeals' as a likely winner. A. Hendriksen has nominated Cardinal Logan for several events at Canterbury Park. The Logan Pointer gelding has been treated to a lengthy spell, on which he has thrived. Brutus has been nominated for the mile saddle race on the first day of the Canterbury Park Meeting. Handicapped on 2.14, he will need to be somewhere near his best to have a chance. He has not raced for a long time, but has been getting through useful work under R. Humphreys's care. Ijollv Chimes, the half-brother to Jolly Pet, has joined J. N. Clarke's New Brighton team. Jolly Chimes showed a lot of speed at the Forbury Park Meeting, and on the better tracks available in Canterbury he may be expected to still further improve. Acron is still regarded as one of the best sprinters in commission, for; handicapped 72yds behind in the Stewards' Handicap, of one mile and a quarter, 2.48 class, he has been set a task that looks beyond him. RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES.

Pleasant conditions prevailed for training operations at Riccarton yesterday morning, and some interesting fast work was witnessed by horses engaged at -the Amberiey Meeting on Saturday. The inside grass track was open, but some of the gallops were executed on the plough, which provided splendid going. Gold Mint finished slightly in front of Sir Roy, with Bronstell two lengths away, at the end of six furlongs on the plough, occupying 1.17 2-5. Sagittarius reeled off four furlongs on tne same track in 49. Lanoer beat Master Clarence after covering sis furlongs on the plough in 1.19.

The remainder of the fast work was confined to the grass track. Polydectes was restricted to a useful task over five furlongs. Zaragoza, joined by Gay Crest at five furlongs, ran six furlongs in the good time of 1.16, the pair being together at the finish. Oriflamb was given a working gallop over six furlongs, taking 1.20. There was little between Wreath of Myrtle and Waihemo at the end of four furlongs, run in 52 2-6. Chiokwheat and Battle Colours were responsible for an attractive gallop over a mile, the former, with a big margin in the weights, holding his companion safe in 1.48 4-5. Amor and Moratorium were together well clear of Fresco after completing a like task in 1.43 3-6, a good effort on the part of the leading pair. Silver Arc and Lytup ran five furlongs in 1.4 3-5. Claymore showed marked improte ment by beating Despot over five furlongs in the smart time of 1.2 1-5. Beaming finished better than Star Raid and Campanula after covering four furlongs in 49 4-5. Rotor and Sarnia strocte over five furlongs in 1.2 4-5. Nincompoop and Tarleton recorded 1.16 4-5 for four furlongs. Mcrivale had an advantage over Sprinkler at the - conclusion of half a mile, covered in 49 3-5. Grevfinch < outclassed Sea Gay in an attractive gallop over five furlongs in 1.2 1-5. Solfello and Thurso beat Cynielli over the same ground in 1.3 2-6. Malmsey recorded the best gallop of the morning ovfer six hirlongs in company with Royal Land, who joined in at the five furlong post.. Malmsey finished on better than her stable companion in the fast time of 1.15, the last five furlongs taking 1.1 2-5.

THE FREE ADVICE CASE. TO TT"* EDITOR 07 4,9 Hz; PBSSS. Sir, —The published report of the rehearing by the New Brighton Trotting Club calls for a reply from ourselves on these points, namely, a suggestion that we have been discourteous, also as we were not affected we had no rights at the original hearing, but had a right of appeal thereafter, and that one of the grounds of the finding on the rehearing, in endorsing the original finding is that after applying for a rehearing we failed to appear. We admit no discourtesy. The telegram to us notifying date of ■ rehearing called for no reply from us, and in any event our Mr G A. McKendriek was out of town when the telegram of April 26th reached our firm, and a reply to that effect was sent by our firm. Respecting the second point, our Mr G. A. McKendriek was present at the meeting when the original hearing took place, and we submit that under the Rules of Trotting he should not only have been present at the hearing, but should -have had the right to crossexamine or call evidence.* After the finding. when he expressed his intention to appeal, he was informed the finding was a question of fact, and that he had no rieht of appeal, and it was only on the view of Mr Davey, the Stipendiary Steward, that the club finally. had to accept the appeal, in this appeal to the Association we finally confined ourselves to the one issue : that t.he hearing by the club was irregular and not in accordance witii the. Rules of Trotting. Also, we never applied for the rehearing as set out in the second finding, and never had any intention of a further visit to Christchurch in connexion therewith, and we notified the Association to that effect. In ainy event we dissociated ourselves from the rehearing by the New Brighton Trotting Club.—Yours, etc., G. A. McKENDRICR, for McKendriek Bros. Auckland, May 19th.

MR W. A. READ'S HORSES. LORD QUEENBOROUGH THE PURCHASER. (FROM OCR OW7J COKBESPOJfBBST.) LONDON, April 21. The "Sporting Life" announces that Lord Queenborough, whose colours are more familiar under National Hunt than Jockey Club Rules, apparently intends to go in for flat racing on a more extensive scale in future. He lias just completed the purchase oi several horses, mainly two and three-year-olds, formerly the property of Mr R. Brendon, who had leased them to Mr W. A. Read for their racing career. Mr Read (a former resident of New Zealand, who had considerable success on the Turf last year and the year before} lias retired from racing, however, and Mr Brendon accepted Lord Queenborough's offer for tne whole batch. Like liis Lordship's other horses, they will enter Bennett's stables at Alfriston. The most important event so far won bv Lord Queenborough is the Iwo Thousand of 1922, which was carried off bv St. Louis.
