"With" the object of encouraging re-, tearch to combat tho principal pests! and diseases affeoting the; fruit'industry, the directors. of .the New Zealand Fruitgrower' Federation have agreed to' a* '£loo* a. year for two yeara in 1 order* to 'make possible the employment 'of' a assistant at the" Cawthron 'lnstitute.' .The annual' report :of' the board or directors statesthat fruitgrowers had for several years emphasised the necessity'- for*- resetfrteh' work' being • carried out in an endeavour to prevent the ravages of' pests' and diseases upon fruit: 'The' Department of Agriculture ■tad:- the • Cawthron Institute had given assistance; in ithe past, but there were two outstandingpests m the bronze beetle and the earwig over whioh ,'tliero was still • no.' control. ,To assist in this direction it had Keen agreed to' give a subsidy of _ £IOO a year for two years. In addition, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research had agreed to give a subsidy of £l5O a year, and the money -would be used to employ a special research assistant. Tho two chief pests would receive special attention, as great expense would be saved if some effective means of control could be discovered.
