[THE PBEBB SpecW Service.] AUCKLAND, January 3, Tho feat of accomplishing a climb to the Girdlestone Peak, Mount Ruapehu, during an unusually heavy thunderstorm, was achieved during the holidays by a party of five men, led by Mr Holl, of Auckland. Added to the unpleasant weather, the party had to contend with very hard climbing conditions. The ascent was made from the south-eastern arete leading up the. ridge that borders the | Wahianoa Glacier. Startling accounts of the effect of an electrical disturbance are given by the party. Lightning, it is reported, appeared to be striking the peak, and when within 150 feet of the top. shocks were experienced by every member of the party. Further phenomena to tost the mettle of the mountaineers came in the way of an extraordinary buzzing from the steel parts of the ice axes, while on reaching the summit the rooks, which apparently were charged with eleotricity, were hissing like gad jets.
