THE SLUMP IN THE COAL INDUSTRY.
CONCERN ON WEST COAST. (SPECIAL TO "THE PEESS.' ) GREYMOUTH, September 9. At a meeting of the Weymouth Borough Council, a letter received from the Inanga'hua County Council referred to the importation of ooal into the Dominion, and the consequent disastrous result to- the coal-mining industry on the West Coast, and the effect on employment generally. In the Reeftw district, it was stated, the radustiy is practically paralysed, and contrasts Strongly with the state of affairs existing a few months ago, when a large number of men were employed. Tha industry is now almost at a standstill; It was thouglht that concerted action by the West Coast local bodies, and the making of representations to the Government might result in the position being eased. The Inaagahua Council suggested that a conference of all local bodies on the Coast be held immediately—if poseible before Parliament meets — the whole matter can be thoroughly investigated and the position placed before the authorities.
