TWENTIETH REINFORCEMENTS. SHORTAGE OF 405. Thj Rt. Hon W. F. Massey, chairman of the Recruiting Board, haa issued the following:— The position with respect to recruitincr for tho 20th Reinforcements is, on the whole, quite satisfactory- Already several of the group areas have oithor provided their Quota or more than their quota, and indications point to the shortages now shown in the remaining groups being mado good before this draft mobilises for training in tho last week of this month. Six men were medically examined yesterday, with the result that one was cleclared fit, one temporarily unfit, ana four unfit. FILLING THE GAPS. A few days ago the Christcliurch Recruiting officials were requested to send up a draft to assist in malting shortages in the Nineteenth Reinforcements. . Among other men asked for were two Mounted Rifles and two Artillery. Notices were accordingly sent t<> men on the waiting list, requesting them to leave for Wellington last evening. After, the notices had been despatched, advice came from Wellington that no Artillerymen were to be sent, and only one Mounted Rifleman. Telegrams were immediately sent by the local rccruiting authorities to tho three men displaced, cancelling th e instructions to" parade, but* in one case the lr.ischief had alreadv been done, for, the young fellow had resigned from his employment, and now he complains bitterly that as a result- of the authorities' action he is out of work. SPREYDON. • A meeting of the Spreydon Recruiting Committee was held, in the Council Chambers.' Barring ton street, the Mayor. (Mr W. H. Winsor) presiding. The chairman explained .that the work of* the committee was" practically completed, there' being, oaly a few names .left which required, attention.' The committee, on going through the list, found that most of the .persons unaccounted for had left .the distnet, and. it was resolved to leave, the remaining, few names for the. chairman and to deal with. A general discussion took place upon the work done,. which > showed , that nearly 1000 persons had been dealt with. It was mentioned that several committees had : sent accounts to the Government for.work done'.in connexion with recruiting, which was considered quite wrong, arid if the Government recognised one, they should recognise the -whole. . The committee considered it the duty of all citizens to do this work voluntary and free of charge.

It was, resolved .that the chairman and secretary' draw up a. report on recruiting in SDrevdon and forward it to the Prime Minister, pointing out that all such work shoulcf be done free. , The chairman remarked' that as this would probably b e the'final meeting of the committee, he wished to thank all those wl.o, had assisted in the work. A vote of thanks -was also accorded to the chairman and hon. secretary for the manner hr which the work had been carried to. a successful : lssue.
