VOLCANIC ACTIVITY.
AMBRYM ISLAND DISASTER. "MAGNIFICENT ANT> GHASTLY." NATIVES ROASTED TO DEATH. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received December 20th, 12.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, December 19Later details of the volcanic eruption at Ambrym Island by the steamer Pacifique indicate heavy loss of life among the natives. The steamer La France made two trips to the island, rescuing over four hundred, but it is feared between four, and five hundred perished.
It is reported that a large party of natives were surrounded by lava. Their relatives were unablo to reach them, and saw them slowly roasted to death.
The captain of tho Pacifique describes the eruption as magnificent and ghastly. There wero continuous detonations, and great red hot boulders were thrown into the sea, causing'the water to rise in columns scores of feet high. The air was filled with choking dust, and. tho whole island lit with an unearthly light.
