The nominations received last eveniiig by the Canterbury Jockey Club for the leading ov«nt at the Metropolitan Sleeting comprise all the best horses in the Dominion. The total for the seren events is 292, as apain6t 306 last rear, but the Stewarcts' Handicap, which is regarded as the chief sprint raoo of the season, has drawn 61 entries, as compared with 58 for the same event last year. Canute and Teviotdale, two of Mr G D. Greenwood's two-year-olds who weiv cent to Australia to race, but who contracted influenza during their visit, arrived by the Mocraki yesterday morning. Messrs W. G. and G. 1/. Stead's Bandeira, who was also on.a visit to Australia, but who broke down, returned by the. samo boat. The jockeys T* G. King and J. Collier, who were injured by falls at the Geraldino 11 .C Meeting, are both making satisfactory progress. The stallion Huascar by Hotchkiss — St. Elya, had to be destroyed a few days ago in consequence of injuries he sustained as the result of getting into a wire fence. The Australian Jockey Club will open ite racing season with the first day of its Spring; Meeting to-day, when several events of interest to New Zealanders will bo decided. The meeting is the largest of the Club's gatherings, and will bo continued ■on Monday. Wednesday, and Saturday of next week. Lady Medallist promises to etnrt a staunch favoucite for the Epsom Handicap, and the St. Alwyne maro has been doing very attractive work lately. Other New Zealand-bred horses with more than an average chance of success include Los Angelos, Broadsword, and Full Sail. The' Dominion has worthy representatives ift several of the other races, and in fact, has moro horses engaged at the meeting than for. some years, past. Kairoma, Home ]{ule, and Wharekura were amongst those entered for the Hurdle Race> Midnight. Sun and Aphaea in the Trial Stakes, Lady Lucy and Vice Admiral in the Spring Stakes, and Peirene, Genius, Wimmera, Culprit, Sunburnt, Irritation, Blackpool, Sharpshooter and Full Sail in the Kensington Handicap. Sir Geo. Clifford headed the list of winning owners at the Wanganui Meeting with £385; the other owners to win £100 or over being E. J. Watt £245, "Mr Higbden" £220, W. J. Douglas £135, A. R.
