The allegation contained iv a tetter published in Thursday's " New Zealand Herald," that Sir John Findlay, at the I intercession of a member _of Parliament had secured a remission of a prisoner's sentence, was denied by the Hon. J. A. Millar in the Hous6 of Representatives this evening. Attention was drawn to the letter by the Leader of the Opposition during the consideration of tibe estimates. Hβ expressed a hope that the matter would be cleared up. . Mr Laurenson said he would not deny .tlhat he had applied for remissions of sentence in certain, cases which had seemed to justify it. Mr Millar said ho toot'the earliest opportunity of giving an emphafc.o denial to the statement. He denied that any political influence had been brought to" bear in regard to the release> of a prisoner. The man had been released on tho report of a Departmental Officer who had gone through fie whole case.
