THE EXPORT OF APPLES.
That the financial results of the bulk of the apple shipments to London this season have not been more satisfactory is explainable by the fact that Europe, as well as the United Kingdom, has been deluged with imports from the United States and Canada. The present season, writes one authority, has been one of bitter experience to most. The imports of American apples into Liverpool alone are put down at 1,159,791 barrels, as against 279,036 barrels for the same period in the previous seasons. London has taken another 500,000 barrels, and Glasgow follows with 355,000 barrels, whilst the total mounts up to 2,200,000 barrels. With such an enormous supply in the British market it is not surprising that prices have ruled low. The glut is now well over, and it is hoped that imports from Australia will, when landed in good condition, realise a better price.
