ILLUSTRATED WHIST HAND,
By "Bedouin," in The Field.
In the Field of March 61 gave a hand to show that it is not always advisable to adhere strictly to rule in the case of returned leads. The case wis, A having led a small one from a five-card suit (as can be counted), i B (his partner), remaining with two high cards and a small one of the suit, gives back the highest, contrary to the rule which prescribes the return of the lowest of four held originally. There is the converse case, viz., that of a player's returning the lower of two cards, instead of the higher. This is illustrated in the following hand. In other respects the hand is elementary. Score : Love all. Z turns up ten of clubs. Note.—A and B are partners against V and Z. A has the first lead, Zis the dealer. The leader's card in each trick is indicated by an underline, j Thr Play. j Trick I.

A Remark (Trick 2).—8 has no diamonds. By the fall of the ten A's suit is established. Trick 111.

Remark (Trick 7). —V has the queen of spades. Trick VIII. , t
A Remark (Trick B).—lf A follows rule here and returns the queen of trumps, thus parting with his own re-entry card, he can never bring in his diamonds, and it is improbable that AB will make any tricks outside trumps, as B has nothing " but trumps and spades, and the best spade is with Y. Accordingly, A departs from rule and returns the six, keeping the queen as a reentry card. By so doing it is probable that if B has king of trumps AB will win the game, and even if B has not that card nothing is lost. As the cards happen to lie, if A returns the queen YZ save the game. Trick IX.
Tricks 10 to 13.—A leads bis two diamonds, to which B discards spades (see I the hands below), and, AB score three by cards and two by honours (game). The Hakds. A B Spades ... ' At trick 9, A apparently has both the remaining trumps or no more. B continues the trump, as in the former case A obtains j the lead and leads the winning diamond; in the latter case, the adverse trumps fall j together. . j |
