(.press association telegrams.] AUCKLAND, January 8. The Sydney Trades and Labor Council have forwarded to Mr P. K. Bust, Secretary of the Auckland Council, a letter of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr S. D. Parnell, who died recently at Wellington. The Aide-de-camp to his Excellency the Governor, Captain Guthrie, arrived from England, via Sydney, yesterday. A well know Auckland blacksmith, Peter Birley, who was noted for his skill iv ironwork, for which he gained prizes at many Exhibitions, died last night. The Trades and Labor Council have passed a vote of condolence with Mrs Birley, and have requested Trade Unions to Attend the funeral of the deceased.
Stjpj are being taken to consolidate the Auciciand Employers' Association on a firm and permanent basis, and it has been decided to confer with the Trades and Labor Council and the Knights of Labor as to the establishment of a Board of Conciliation.
The warship Yolta has sailed for Valparaiso, en route to France. WELLINGTON, January 8. By a fire at the East Coast it is estimated that 15,000 acres of grass were burnt besides a quantity of fencing and a number of sheep.
Further deoiaiona of the Commissioner under the Tariff Act are gazetted. At the meeting of the City Council to-night the recommendations of the Finance Committee, in connection with the erection of a free publio library, were adopted by seven to three. Tne following will represent Wellington at the athletic meeting at Auckland: — Batger, hurdles j King, sprint races; jumping, Hume; walking, McDonald. No long distance meh'will go. NELSON, January 8. The bowhng match, Wellington v Nelson, was played here to-day, the latter winning by futeen. There were four rinks of sixteen players each side. TIMARU, January 8. Henry Clark, a fireman on the Bangatira, has been arrested and remanded on a charge of stealing a pocket-book containing _o from the person of a laborer. OAMABU, January 8. The Oaaaaru Harbor Board's endow-, ment, Otematata Station, was offered for Bale this morning in sir small grazing runs. Five were passed in without a h\r., and the remaining one, containing 160 acreß, was purchased at the upset rental, JBIG3 15s, with _45 valuation improvements. DUNEDIN, January 8. It is understood that the Island Block Company during the course of ten hours' sluicing last week obtained 81bs weight of gold, and during the present week have secured between 30oa and _ooz daily. The land sale attracted a large attendance. The bidding for small grazing runs was brisk, bub there was no competition for pastoral licenses. All the runs but one were sold at the upset. At the City Court Henry Tattam, alias Bennett, was remanded until Tuesday on a charge of being concerned in the Oak- | lands Station aticking-up case.
