MOUNTAINEERING ON SUNDAY.

TO THB BDITOR OF THB PBKSS. Sir,—l have had the pleasure of readlnK your newspaper for many years, and until last Monday I do not recollect that you have recorded Sunday exploits save in the case of the Freethought outings. I am not what is known as a Sabbatarian, but I have a decided belief that one day in seven for rest is God's direction to man for man's welfare, and, further, I am fully persuaded that the keeping of Sunday as a day of religious worship and of spiritual, mental, and physical refreshment is a means of promoting the welfare of mankind. lam well aware that many young men spend their Sundays in working hard under the name of pleasure, but I am sorry that you should allow your influential journal to be used as a meuns of promoting such an end and of appealing to the love of adventure and to human vanity gratified at the risk of an addition to the many demoralising influences of the present day. I am aware that it is an indiscreet act to call an editor to account, but I trust that the importance of the subject and my respect for your valuable journal and jealousy for its influence for good will be my justification for so foolhardy a deed.— Yours, &c, Observer.
