LYTTELTON VOLUNTEERS.

XO TSE EDITOR OP THE PRESS. Sib, —In your issue of the 30rh inst. I notice in a report of the Borough Council's proceedings that in reply to a request from Councillor Willcox, the Mayor spoke to the effect that a spirit of vindictiveness had been displayed by some one towards three of the inhabitants of Lytfelton, and among other remarks strongly suggesting a public meeting to inquire into the matter. I should have thought, sir, that the Borough Council had more important matters to attend to, lhan affairs of a private nature occurring outside their chamber; and I was very much surprised to see that the Mayor had given utterance to such expressions. Fancy a public meeting to inquire why three men had been dismissed from a private corps of volunteers-—the thing is too absurd to be spoken of without a smile. Yours obeciently, Citizen. Chri»tchurch, July 31.
